On This Day: Alex Morgan Debuts For USWNT In Utah Snow

SALT LAKE CITY – On this day 12 years ago Alex Morgan came off the bench for the U.S. Women’s National Team in their 1-0 victory over Mexico at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Morgan, who at the time was still playing for the Cal Golden Bears, was the only member of the USWNT who was still playing in college. She came off the bench in the second half to secure her debut.

“I am from Southern California, I have never played in snow in my life,” Morgan said in an interview shortly after her debut. “They put me in in the second half and right away my feet went numb, I felt like I had nubs at the end of my legs. I did not know how to play in the snow. We ended up winning which was great, we did snow angels and it was awesome, but I couldn’t feel my feet for like five days after that game.”
Morgan has since played 190 matches for the United States and has scored 115 goals. She ranks as the fifth-best goalscorer in the history of the USWNT and is highly regarded as one of the greatest women players of the modern era.
