SALT LAKE CITY – Tony Finau has fired a two-under-par opening round at the Travelers Championship to share a tie of 21st.
Finau’s day began on the 10th and made his first mistake on the par 4 12th where he made bogey. But a wonderful putt from 16 feet on 17 brought him back to even par where he made the turn.
Finau opened the back nine with a birdie on the par 4 3rd hole after sticking his approach shot to one foot and easily tapping in his third shot. He made another birdie on the par 5 6th to conclude at two-under-par.
Rory Mcllroy leads the field at eight-under while Xander Schauffele and Martin Laird will enter the second round one shot back at seven-under.
Finau is playing alongside Im Sung-jae who withdrew from the tournamen hours before his opening tee time sparking rumours that the South Korean may be headed for the Saudi-backed LIV Series. He also played alongside Luke List who followed Finau’s lead and concluded at two-under-par.
On Friday, Finau will begin his round off the first tee at 10:40 a.m. where he will hope to chase down the overnight leader Mcllroy.
Finau enters the Travelers Championship following a missed cut at the U.S. Open a week ago. Prior to the U.S. Open, Finau managed to finish inside the top five in two consecutive tournaments.
