SALT LAKE CITY– Micah Bernard is ecstatic about the running back depth in the Utah backfield this season. The young back is also determined to show the world just what he can do in the 2022 campaign.

“When you have the guys like we do in this running back room, you can’t let up, every single day is a grind,” said Bernard.

The young running back is excited to have good competition and depth in the room for Utah’s upcoming football season.

“Last year you thought it was competitive, this year it’s very competitive,” said Bernard.

Tavion Thomas of course lead the way for the Utes at the running back position but the backfield is crowded.

Bernard looks like the solidified back up but freshman four-star recruit Jaylon Glover is looking to push for time in the backfield as well.

“We all have our role, you just have to step in and do what’s asked of you,” said Bernard.

A lot was asked of Bernard last year for the Utes, he was used as a change of pace back from Thomas and was even called upon to play corner infamously in the Rose Bowl.

Doing a thing like that is an example of what makes the Utah coaching staff glow over Bernard who is clearly willing to step into whatever role he is asked to fill.

“It doesn’t matter how many reps you get, that rep you just have to give it 110 percent,” said Bernard.

Tavion Thomas ended up ranked in ESPN’s top 100 football players going into the season, Thomas clocked in at number 84. Thomas, a 1,000 yard rusher last year will once again be called upon to produce in 2022 in a back field that has plenty of workhorses.

Bernard also spoke about his belief that his running skills have improved going into 2022, valuable and good news for the young scat back.

“Last year I was a scat back, picking up blitzes and all that, this year I think if I get the ball more you’ll see more explosive plays,” said Bernard.

Strong words from a confident young running back looking to get more work in a crowded and deep Utah backfield.
