Upsets: Corner Canyon Stuns Skyridge, American Fork Shocks Lone Peak

SALT LAKE CITY – 6A football in the state of Utah featured a pair of exciting upsets in a pair of ranked contests.

Ranked Upsets

#5 Corner Canyon @ #1 Skyridge

The No. 5 Corner Canyon Chargers upset the No. 1 Skyridge Falcons on Friday, 21-17. Skyridge jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first 12 minutes of action. Corner Canyon answered with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter. The Falcons took the lead back before halftime with a field goal to make it 17-14. In the second half, the Chargers shutout the Falcons. A fourth quarter score by Drew Patterson was the difference in Corner Canyon’s win. Patterson ended the game with a pair of rushing touchdowns. With the win, the Falcons fell to a 6-1 record and the Chargers improved to 5-2.

#3 Lone Peak 14 @ #12 American Fork 17 OT

The No. 12 American Fork Cavemen upset the No. 3 Lone Peak Knights in an overtime thriller on Friday night, 17-14.  The Cavemen hosted the Knights and capture the win after coming back in the second half to force overtime. Lone Peak owned a 14-7 lead going into the fourth quarter. American Fork returned an interception for a touchdown to tie the game with 8:49 left in regulation. After the Knights missed a field goal in extra time, the Cavemen connected on a kick to claim victory.

Here are all of the results in the 6A classification from the seventh week of the 2022 high school football season.

Region 1

Fremont 17 @ Davis 30

The Davis Davis fought off the Fremont Silverwolves for a 30-17 win on Friday evening. After falling behind 10-3 in the first quarter, the Darts bounced by in the second half by ouscoring the Silverwolves 20-0 over the final two quarters. Davis quarterback Jackson Stevens tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the game. With the result, the Darts improved to a 4-3 record and Fremont fell to 2-5.

#16 Syracuse 49 @ Clearfield 0

The No. 16 Syracuse Titans took a road trip and crushed the Clearfield Falcons, 49-0. The Titans put up 35 of their points in the first half. Kobe Bennett led Syracuse with two rushing scores. With the result, Syracuse improved to a 5-2 record and Clearfield dropped to 0-7.

Weber 19 @ Layton 38

The Layton Lancers beat the Weber Warriors on Friday, 38-19. After falling behind in the first quarter, the Lancers outscored the Warriors over following 24 minutes of action, 25-6. Layton’s Tyler Wensel tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the game. With the result, the Lancers improved to a 4-3 record and the Warriors dropped to 1-6.

Region 2

#9 West 35 @ Taylorsville 0 (Thurs.)

Isaiah SueSue threw a touchdown pass to Sesi Vailahi and ran in a score. Tai Arona added a rushing TD for the Panthers. Taimane Brown and Ryder Masina each had a pick-six.

Kearns 20 @ Hunter 12 (Thurs.)

Bryce Benson and Teki Finau each threw a touchdown pass for Kearns. They each found Kapeli Smith for both scores. Nathan Parke scored both of Hunter’s touchdowns on the ground.

Granger 42 @ Cyprus 14 (Thurs.)

Layton Carr led the Lancers with six touchdown passes. He connected with Landon Figueroa five times and Malachi Tuuao once. For Cyprus, Skyler Armenta and Carter Langford each ran in a score.

Region 3

#22 Riverton 34 @ Copper Hills 14

The No. 22 Riverton Silverwolves ran past the Copper Hills Grizzlies on Friday, 34-14. Riverton jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the first quarter before scoring 24 unanswered points to put the game away. Tegan Morgan scored two touchdowns for the Silverwolves. With the result, Riverton improved to 4-3 and Copper Hills fell to 2-5.

#15 West Jordan 21 @ Herriman 15

The No. 15 West Jordan Jaguars fought off the Herriman Mustangs for a 21-15 win. Herriman owned a 10-7 lead at halftime before the Jaguars outscored the Mustangs in the second half, 14-5. Dameon Crosby led the Jaguars with a pair of touchdowns. With the result, West Jordan improved to a 5-1 record and the Mustangs fell to 2-5.

Region 4

#17 Pleasant Grove 7 @ Westlake 0

The No. 17 Pleasant Grove Vikings held off the Westlake Thunder for a 7-0 win on Friday night. The defensive battle was decided by a second quarter score by Pleasant Grove’s Mason Jensen and Shawn Cottle. With the result, the Vikings moved to a 5-2 record this season and the Thunder fell to 2-5 on the year.

Non-Region

Roy 15 @ #6 Farmington 45

The No. 6 Farmington Phoenix flew past the Roy Royals on Friday evening, 45-15. Following a 7-7 first quarter, the Phoenix went on a 35-0 scoring spurt over the next two quarters, including 28 points in the second quarter. Easton Wight threw four touchdown passes for the Phoenix. With the win, Farmington improved to 7-0 and Roy dropped to 4-3.
