Utah Valley Tops Western Colorado In Home Opener

OREM, Utah – The Utah Valley Wolverines started their 2022-23 home slate with a 91-64 win over Western Colorado on Wednesday night.

Six Utah Valley players scored in double figures in their win over Western Colorado, led by Le’Tre Darthard with 14 points. Trey Woodbury chipped in 13 points and four rebounds on 5-of-9 shooting from the field. Aziz Bandaogo notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go with three blocked shots on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting from the floor.

Justin Harmon and Blaze Nield each dropped 11 points, while Cam Alford added 10 points off the bench.

“We finished this game with 25 assists on 35 made baskets and that was great to see,” said Utah Valley head coach Mark Madsen. “Our defense really ramped up in the second half. We got some stops and the guys responded.”

The first half was tightly contested with UVU taking a 40-35 lead into the halftime break. In the second half, the Wolverines broke the game open by outscoring Western Colorado 51-29.

UVU shot 35-of-62 from the field for 56% as a team, including 6-for-19 from the three-point line. They improved their shooting in the second half, making 51% of their field goals in the first half and just 1-for-8 from beyond the arc to knocking down 61% of their field goal attempts and 5-for-11 from the perimeter.

13 players appeared in the game for UVU, including 11 players getting 10 minutes or more of playing time. Of those 13 players, 11 of them scored in the win at the UCCU Center.

For Western Colorado, two players reached double figures, including 17 points from Avery Rembao and 10 points from Kade Juelfs. The visitors shot 42% from the floor and 29% from the three-point line.

After losing their season opener to Utah State, the Wolverines improved their record to 1-1 on the season. They will host Northern Arizona on Saturday, November 12 at 2:00 p.m. MT on ESPN+.
