Utah Valley adds contract extension for Todd Phillips through 2030

OREM — Todd Phillips isn’t going anywhere other than his office in central Utah County for the time being.

The fourth-year head coach at Utah Valley has signed a contract extension through the 2029-30 season, both parties announced Wednesday afternoon.

Phillips, whose first three seasons with the Wolverines included back-to-back outright Western Athletic Conference regular-season championships, has won 25-plus games in each of the past two seasons including consecutive appearances in the WAC Tournament final and a pair of National Invitation Tournament bids.

Now he’ll have a chance to add to his 66-34 overall record, the fastest coach in program history to achieve such a mark, with an agreement that runs through March 31, 2030.

“Todd has continued to elevate our men’s basketball program and has established a championship standard at Utah Valley,” Utah Valley athletic director Jared Sumsion said in a statement. “His leadership, ability to develop student-athletes, and commitment to building a sustainable program have positioned UVU basketball for continued success. As we begin this exciting new chapter in The Big West, we are thrilled that Todd will continue leading our program into the future.”

Utah Valley will transition to the Big West Conference this fall, having recently finished a schedule that starts Monday, Nov. 2 and includes just three nonconference home games at the UCCU Center, where the Wolverines are 27-1 over the past two seasons.

He’ll be joined by returning assistants Todd Okeson and former UVU guard Ivory “Trey” Young, as well as new assistant and offensive coordinator Andrew May. The former Snow College head coach joined Phillips’ staff in the offseason after guiding the Badgers to a 102-26 overall record and four consecutive 20-win seasons.

May was the winningest coach in Snow College basketball history at the time of his departure.

In addition to adding Utah State transfers Jordy Barnes and Braden Housley, the Wolverines also brought back Dominick Nelson for a fifth year after the 6-foot-5 guard from Miami, Florida, helped Iowa State to a 29-8 record and a run to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 last season.

Before that, Nelson earned WAC Player of the Year and first-team All-WAC honors in 2024-25, when he averaged 14.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game for the WAC champion Wolverines.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this program and representing Utah Valley University,” Phillips said. “What we’ve built here is a reflection of the players, coaches, staff and everyone who believes in what we’re doing. We’ve accomplished some special things together, but we’re not satisfied. Moving into The Big West gives us another opportunity to raise the standard, compete for championships and work toward taking this program to the NCAA Tournament.

“My family and I love being a part of UVU, and we’re excited about what’s ahead.”
