SALT LAKE CITY – The Super Bowl is on the line and the field is loaded with quarterback talent.

The group is a who’s who of signal callers with Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes both are nominated for the MVP and offensive player of the year awards.

Cincinnati Bengal Joe Burrow is up for the Most Valuable Player and then there is a rookie, Brock Purdy, who is leading the San Francisco 49ers.

It is pretty clear which quarterback does not fit in this group of three.

Super Bowl Quarterbacks

Mahomes, Hurts, and Burrow are all superstars and Purdy was the last pick in the draft. Signs point to the rookie as being a more-than-capable quarterback. However, when it comes to the Super Bowl, people want to watch stars, specifically at quarterback and Purdy doesn’t have that, according to Unrivaled’s Alex Kirry.

“I think the best Super Bowl matchup is the Bengals versus the Eagles,” Kirry said. “I don’t want to see Brock Purdy in the Super Bowl, and it’s nothing against him. … I want to see an absolutely freaking shootout… but what I want is marquee quarterbacks facing off against one another.”

The quarterback combination Kirry wants is Hurts against Burrow. Even though Mahomes is considered the best quarterback in the league – he is out, the offense the Chiefs runs is basically Mahomes finding a way to get the ball to Travis Kelce. The Bengals and Eagles can just do a lot more with the ball, Kirry thinks.

The case can be made that the 49ers are up there with the best as Purdy did lead San Francisco’s offense to five games of 30.

Clearly, the 49ers have talent with Christian McCaffery, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle on offense. However, it all comes back to name recognition. Seeing the best of the best is what the Super Bowl should be, especially at the quarterback position.

Brock Purdy Is One Of Five

There have been four other rookies to make it to a conference title game and Purdy will be the fifth. The most recent one to earn the start happened all the way back in 2009 when it was the New York Jets and Mark Sanchez.

Sanchez lost that game to the Indianapolis Colts 30-17, and so did the other three that preceded him. If Purdy goes on to win the NFC title he would then become the first rookie quarterback to start in a Super Bowl.

The odds of Purdy making it to a Super Bowl seem slim and likely not be due to what Purdy brings to the game. He has done more than a good job in filling in for Jimmy Garoppolo.

In the six games, Purdy played in the regular season he had 13 touchdowns and just three interceptions but averaged 218 yards per game.

Those numbers are fine but they are nothing to get excited about for a Super Bowl starting quarterback.
