USU gymnast Alivia Ostendorf performs her floor routine against the Boise State Broncos in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah on Friday, February 10.

LOGAN, Utah – Entering short-handed and losing another gymnast during warm-ups, USU lost 196.075-193.325 against Boise State.

Utah State (1-6, 1-5) hosted the Boise State Broncos (2-5, 2-2) at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Friday, February 10. It was the second straight week the Aggies came up short against Boise State after losing 196.325-195.675 in Boise on Friday, February 3.

Despite the loss, it became a memorable meet for freshman Avery Bibbey when she was forced into competition in two events. Bibbey finished seventh on bars, an event she had participated in previously. In her first appearance on floor, Bibbey placed 11th.

“Going into tonight, we only had five floor routines that we were going to put up and unfortunately, we had an athlete go down and only had four floor routines to put out there,” White said. “Avery stepped up to the plate and did the floor routine that she could do. For me, that was a highlight because even when adversity happens, it’s how you handle it, and it’s what you do for your team to help them continue to be successful and she did that tonight. I couldn’t be more proud of her.”

Utah State senior Alivia Ostendorf opened the meet on vault with her 9.800 finishing good enough for fourth. Sophomore Amari Evans’ 9.775 placed her fifth.

“We came in a lot more confident than we did last week at Boise State,” Ostendorf said. “I was prepared to have a good meet. It didn’t go the way we wanted it to. I just wish we would’ve done what we did in practice. We just need to show everybody that we can.”

The meet turned on the second rotation when USU suffered three falls on bars, forcing them to count two falls in their scoring. Graduate-senior Grace Rojas paced the team with a 9.875 on bars, good for third.

“We just need to learn how to put everything together,” Ostendorf said. “We have the talent, we have the confidence, we have everything in the gym, we just are having trouble putting it together, which, I think, is our biggest struggle. When we can do that, we are going to be very successful.”
