Utes Bulletin: Things Happening In Utah Athletics (Week Of 2/20/23)

Feb 21, 2023, 2:28 PM

SALT LAKE CITY – With football on a bit of a hiatus till spring ball kicks off and several of the smaller sports in full-swing and having success, we thought a one-stop-shop for little tidbits of Utah Athletics information might be helpful for you, the fan, with the Utes Bulletin.

If you missed any of the highlights from the previous week, you can review that here.

Without further ado, here is this week’s Utes Bulletin that includes ranking updates, upcoming events for the week, and important dates to keep track of among other things of interest concerning Utah Athletics for the week of 2/20/23.

Utah Utes Basketball Double-Headers

After a rough outing last week for the Runnin’ Utes (0-2) and women’s basketball (1-2) in Arizona, both teams will be back home at the Huntsman playing host to the SoCal (men) and NorCal (women) teams in double-headers to close up the regular season.

The Utah’s basketball teams first suit up on Thursday, February 23 with the women hosting Cal at 5:00 pm MT. The men will follow hosting No. 4 UCLA with a 9:00 pm MT tip-off immediately following. You can watch the women on Pac-12 Network and the men on FS1.

Following a day of rest on Friday, both teams will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, February 25. The Utah women’s finale comes against No. 3 Stanford that tips off at 12:00 pm MT and can be viewed on Pac-12 Networks while the men round off the day against USC with a 6:00 pm MT tip-off aired on ESPN2 or ESPNU.

Utah Women In The Polls

The AP Poll voters were not so kind to the Utah women this week after splitting their trip to Arizona with a loss Friday night to the No. 18 (at the time) Wildcats and a win over the Sun Devils. The Utes dropped four spots from No. 4 to No. 8 in the latest AP Top 25 this week.

Utah Utes In The NBA

While the Utah men and women were away, the NBA played on the University of Utah campus for NBA All-Star Weekend.

As part of the All-Star festivities, one familiar face made his way back to his old stomping grounds to host a mental health panel at the Spence and Cleone Eccles Football Facility last Friday evening.

Former Runnin’ Ute Jarred DuBois has not only been making an impact in the NBA as an assistant coach on the rise with L.A. Lakers, but also off the court holding important conversations surrounding mental health with his foundation, Everyone has a Story.

No Curtains

It’s been a sore subject for fans over the past few seasons, but Utah Athletics announced last week that the remaining two home games for Utah basketball will feature a curtainless Huntsman Center.

Utah Gymnastics

The men and women’s basketball teams weren’t the only ones having a bit of a tough time on the road in Arizona. Utah gymnastics also hit a road bump competing against ASU during Monday’s President’s Day showdown.

However, unlike women’s basketball, the Red Rocks’ loss in many ways helped them rather than hurt them by putting up a good score to drop a lower score for NQS.

Red Rocks In The Rankings

Utah gymnastics has stayed steady at No. 4 in the country as rankings have finally rolled over to the NQS system.

They have also stayed steady as the No. 1 beam team in the country. However, they dropped a spot to No. 5 on vault, two spots to No. 8 on bars, and five spots to No. 12 on floor.

Who, What, When, Where

The Red Rocks will also enjoy a comforting trip back home to the Huntsman Center this weekend to host Cal on Friday night. Meet begins at 6:00 pm MT and will be aired on Pac-12 Networks.

Utah Lacrosse

While the Big Three in spring sports were sent to Arizona during NBA All-Star Weekend, Utah Lacrosse was also sent away, but closer by in Herriman at Zions Bank Stadium.

The Utes unfortunately couldn’t pull it off against Vermont, coming up a hair short, 14-13, in overtime.

Utah will be on the road again the next two weeks starting with Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. Faceoff is set for 10:oo am MT on Saturday, February 25.

Lacrosse Camps With The Utes

Utah lacrosse sent out a Tweet with registration for their spring camps. If you have a young lacrosse player or know one, the Utes have opportunities to for them to receive some training from the coaching staff and players in March.

Utah Baseball

Utah baseball pitched the first games of their season over the weekend traveling to San Francisco to take on USF.

The Utes started their series with Dons out with a win on Friday but dropped the last three of the series.

Utah sits at 1-3 on the season so far and will head to Corpus Christi, Texas for the Klegberg Bank College Classic against Houston. First pitch is set for Friday, February 24 at 1:00 pm MT.

Utah Football

While there isn’t a ton going on with football, the headlines were certainly interesting early last week as all eyes were on offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig and what he would choose to do with Notre Dame.

Ultimately this one played out in Utah’s favor even with reports surfacing that the Irish made one last push for Ludwig along with offensive line coach Jim Harding. It was a big win for a program that is on a very upward trajectory through the college ranks.

Hear From Coach Whitt

Utah football head coach Kyle Whittingham will be on hand Thursday, February 23 from 7-8 pm MT as part of the Union Scholarship Speaker Series.

Whittingham is the first-ever speaker at the event the A. Ray Olpin Student Union is putting on and has been asked to share his insights on leadership, teamwork, education and leading through adversity.

The event will also feature a silent auction with signed Utah football memorabilia from coach Whittingham.

This is an event that must be registered for with tickets for the general public going for $10. University of Utah students get in free.

The purpose of this event is to raise money for Union Scholarships for University of Utah students to which all proceeds will go.
