SALT LAKE CITY – Utah State University student-athlete Andre Seldon Jr. passed away in an accident at Porcupine Reservoir in Cache County on Saturday.

The Utah State Football Team and Utah State Athletics mourned the loss of the 22-year-old who was scheduled to start classes in the fall.

In a press release, the Cache County Sheriff’s Office reported that a young adult male was seen diving from cliffs and did not resurface at around 2:20 p.m.

Dive units conducted a search of the area and Utah State said on their website that he was found at 9:05 p.m.

Before Seldon came to Utah State this summer, he played for two years at New Mexico State and two years at Michigan. Interim Head Coach Nate Dreiling was a defensive coordinator at New Mexico State while Seldon was in the secondary.

“Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own,” Dreiling said. “Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss.”

Vice President and Athletics Director Diana Sabau also gave a statement on behalf of Utah State Athletics.

“Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated over the sudden death of Andre Seldon Jr.,” Sabau said. “We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who loved Andre.”

Road To Utah State

Born and raised in Michigan, Seldon was a top football recruit in the nation with the Belleville High Tigers and committed to the Michigan Wolverines as the fifth-best player in the state.

After getting limited opportunity over two years in the Big Ten, Seldon bet on himself and transferred to New Mexico State.

He was an impact player for the Aggies in 2022 and 2023. He entered the transfer portal after last season and ended up choosing Utah State in May.
