PROVO, Utah- The BYU Women’s basketball team is off to a rocky start in Big 12 play, having suffered some close losses to top-tier competition in their 1-5 open to the conference schedule.

Despite a current two-game losing streak, the Cougars have seen some exceptional play from one lady in particular. Delaney Gibb, a freshman out of Raymond, Alberta, Canada, had a phenomenal against Texas Tech, earning Big 12 Freshman of the Week for the fifth time this season and second week in a row.

The Cougars only played one game last week when they traveled to Lubbock, Texas to take on the Texas Tech Lady Raiders on January 18.

BYU would go on to lose a close two-possession matchup by a score of 70-65, but Gibb’s outstanding performance to lead all scores was what kept the Cougars in the game.

Delaney finished the night with 22 points that included four three-pointers that came on better than 50% from beyond the arc.

In the previous week, Delaney had strong performances in a win at home against Houston and a loss to nationally ranked Kansas State that secured her Freshman of the Week.

Against Houston, Gibb scored 16 as well as four rebounds and three assists to help push BYU past Houston. Gibb was also a perfect 7-7 from the free-throw line in the matchup.

The Cougars struggled in stretches against a stingy Kansas State defense, but Gibb was still able to score a team-high 18 points on an efficient 7-15 from the field. She stuffed the stat sheet in other areas too, adding seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and a steal.

Delaney Gibb currently leads the team in points per game with 16.9 and minutes played per game with 32.8. She has also taken 40 more three-pointers than any other Cougar but is still third on the team in three-point percentage at 40.2%
