PROVO, Utah – Nationally-ranked BYU basketball looks to extend its winning streak to six games when they host the West Virginia Mountaineers at the Marriott Center on Saturday night.
It’s the second meeting this season between the Big 12 foes. BYU upset West Virginia earlier this month in Morgantown on February 11 with a 73-69 win.
The Cougars have won both meetings against West Virginia since joining the Big 12 last season. This will be the first time BYU has hosted West Virginia in Provo.
BYU is 20-8 overall and 11-6 in Big 12 Conference play. The Cougars are tied for fourth place in the Big 12 standings. If BYU can maintain the fourth-place spot in the Big 12 race, that would give them a double-bye to the Big 12 Conference Tournament in Kansas City in two weeks.
West Virginia is 17-11 overall and 8-9 in the Big 12.
The Mountaineers have had an up-and-down run in the conference portion of the schedule. After starting league play at 3-1, West Virginia has been 5-8 since.
They are coming into Saturday night’s game fresh off a 73-55 win over TCU in Morgantown on Tuesday.
Star guard Javon Small leads West Virginia.
In the first meeting, BYU held Small to only nine points, his second-lowest scoring output this season. Beyond the low-scoring output, he only attempted one field goal in the second half of BYU’s win.
BYU is led by junior Richie Saunders, who scored over 20 points in three consecutive games. He’s one of the leading scorers during Big 12 play this season.
Along with Saunders, the entire BYU offense is operating at a high level.
BYU has scored more than 90 points in its last three games. They have also become the first team in the 21st century to score at least 90 with at least 50% shooting from the field, made at least 12 3-pointers in each game, and had fewer than a dozen turnovers.
In each of the last 3 games, @BYUMBB has:
