Runnin’ Utes Senior Night

Meanwhile, the Runnin’ Utes will also be honoring its six seniors in Hunter Erickson, Brandon Haddock, Caleb Lohner, Lawson Lovering, Mason Madsen and Gabe Madsen during pregame ceremonies.

This group contributed a lot over the past couple of seasons. G. Madsen, Lovering, and Erickson represent the last few pieces of the core to Utah Basketball during Craig Smith’s tenure. Madsen was the first player to commit to Smith four years ago, while both Lovering and Erickson joined the program a couple of years later.

Lohner and M. Madsen joined the program this past offseason and have contributed to success this season. Haddock is a walk-on that has been with the program for his entire collegiate career as well.

Fans are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes before the 7 p.m. (MST) tip-off to honor the six seniors.

Utah’s still playing for a lot

In their 26-point win over the Sun Devils, Utah showed they’re still focused on the here and now. It wasn’t just that they defeated the Sun Devils by a comfortable margin; it was that the group played hard and had the body language of a team still hungry for competition.

Given ASU’s own situation amid their struggles, the difference in body language and togetherness between them and Utah could not have been more obvious. Now looking ahead, there’s still a lot to play for with two games remaining.

Utah sits at 8-10 in conference play and can still earn a first-round bye. The Utes are tied with West Virginia for ninth place and just one game back from TCU and Baylor, who sit at 9-9 on the season and currently hold the No. 7 and No. 8 slots in the standings.

Theoretically, Utah can be as high as seventh and as low as 13th based on who wins which games in the final two contests of the regular season.

Utah’s search for new head coach

University of Utah director of athletics Mark Harlan announced a change in leadership for the Runnin’ Utes program on Monday, Feb. 24, relieving fourth-year head coach Craig Smith.

Utah proved it can compete in the Big 12 this season, which added to the shock value. Utah believes it can reach another level as a program, but a change in leadership is needed to get there.

Hiring the right candidate will be vital to Utah’s climb within the Big 12 Conference. After a week of work, the process appears to be moving quickly, and indications still point to Alex Jensen being the top candidate.

The Need-To-Knows about the West Virginia Mountaineers

The last time these two faced off was last month when West Virginia defeated the Utes 72-61 in Morgantown on Feb. 8, but a lot has changed since then.

The Mountaineers are 17-12, 8-10 and still in control of their NCAA Tournament fate. They lost to BYU, 77-56, Saturday night at the Marriott Center. Despite the loss, the Mountaineers are still No. 48 in the NET ranking.

Javon Small continues to lead the Mountaineers, averaging 16.0 points and 5.2 points over the last two weeks. Amani Hansberry has stepped up in the absence of Tucker Devries, averaging 11.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.
