SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Real Salt Lake played well on paper but couldn’t capitalize between the lines in a 2-0 loss to the Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field on Saturday.

RSL led in both time of possession and shot attempts. However, none of their first-half attempts were on target, while Minnesota forced four saves on fewer attempts. Tani Oluwaseyi scored both of United’s goals in the 30th and 55th minutes.

Through eight games this year across all competitions, Real has been held scoreless four times.

They will return home to host the LA Galaxy on Saturday, April 5.

First Half

Although the time of possession said that Real Salt Lake controlled the first half, that was far from the truth.

Despite having the ball for over 32 minutes leading into the break, Minnesota had twice as many shot attempts, four more shots on goal, and five more corner kicks.

None of Real’s four shots were on frame, while some of United’s misses either hit the crossbar or painted the outside of the posts.

Midway through the opening half, frustrations were building for both sides but for vastly different reasons. Minnesota felt it should have found the back of the net at least once and Real Salt Lake wasn’t much of a threat in the attacking third.

In the 30th minute, Minnesota finally broke the seal as Tani Oluwaseyi went airborne and found the bottom right corner.

The United immediately went back on the attack and forced yet another Rafael Cabral save less than two minutes later.

After a few misses and more hard-nosed defense from both sides, the 45th minute came, and six minutes of stoppage time were added to the first half.

Extra time saw nothing but three fouls and three subsequent free kicks that ultimately didn’t go anywhere. The whistle was blown and Minnesota took its 1-0 lead into the locker room.

Second Half

With a chance at a fresh start in the second 45′, it was a lot of the same for RSL.

The offense did take a step up, but it wasn’t enough to break Minnesota’s back line. In the second half, the shooting was much better for Real. There were fewer attempts, but half of the shots taken were on target.

Unfortunately, Real’s step-up wasn’t met with any United FC regression. In the 55th minute, Oluwaseyi scored again for a brace and a 2-0 Minnesota advantage.

The score lit a fire under Real Salt Lake. All of the match’s next four shots came from RSL with a miss, a block, and two saves.

The aggression slowly died down for RSL, but the energy was still there from both sides. A total of 11 shots were taken in the final 20 minutes of regulation.

Real was unable to break through as the 90th minute and eventually four minutes of stoppage time came and went.

With the 2-0 loss, they fall to 2-0-4 on the season.
