Martin Schiller Named Third Assistant Coach On Alex Jensen’s Utah Basketball Staff

SALT LAKE CITY—Alex Jensen hired Martin Schiller as an assistant coach for Utah basketball on Friday, adding his fourth staff member, and third assistant coach.
Schiller comes to Utah with an extensive coaching background. He’s served as head coach at multiple levels internationally and in the US.
During his time as an assistant coach for the German national team from 2015 to 2019, Jensen and Schiller crossed paths and worked together in 2015.

In filling out his staff, Jensen has been focused on maximizing the value of each spot, and Schiller fits the bill. Thanks to nearly 20 years of experience, Schiller brings quality credentials to Utah basketball.
Schiller will end his tenure as the head coach of Rasta Vechta, competing in Germany’s Bundesliga and the FIBA Champions League. There, he’s coached one of the more promising prospects, Johan Grunloh, who is receiving NBA consideration.
Before that, he led Germany’s U20 national team at the 2024 FIBA European Championship in Poland. In 2022–23, he coached Casademont Zaragoza in Spain’s top pro league, Liga ACB.

Prior to Spain, Schiller coached EuroLeague mainstay Zalgiris Kaunas in Lithuania, leading the team to the 2020–21 LKL Championship, the King Mindaugas Cup, and the club’s best win percentage in eight seasons.
From 2017–20, he coached the Salt Lake City Stars (NBA G League), earning Coach of the Year honors in 2020 after leading the team to the Western Conference regular-season title, a Winter Showcase championship, and a 14-game win streak—the second-longest in G League history.
He joined the German National Team in 2015 as an assistant, working major FIBA tournaments through 2019 with NBA players like Dirk Nowitzki, Dennis Schröder, Daniel Theis, and others.
Schiller began his pro coaching journey as an assistant in the German Bundesliga with Artland Dragons and Riesen Ludwigsburg (2010–15). Before that, he coached U16 teams in Austria (2002–10), winning two league titles and earning Coach of the Year honors with two semifinal runs.
Jensen adds someone with a lot of head coaching experience and international relationships. That will be valuable as he looks to rebuild the Utah basketball program into a contender.

With Alex Jensen now leading the University of Utah men’s basketball program, the former Runnin’ Ute standout will soon begin to lay the foundation for his program.
Jensen’s connection to the university and extensive coaching background uniquely positions him to reconnect the program with its storied history and inspire optimism for the future.
It’s become clear, though, that his mere presence is already resonating with the Utah basketball community, which bodes well for him and the program’s future.
