SANDY, Utah – Upset-minded Utah Royals FC came out on the wrong end of a late goal, falling to Kansas City and former star Ally Sentnor 1-0 at home.

The Royals (1-11-3, 6 points) hosted the league-leading Kansas City Current (13-2-0, 39 points) at America First Field on Friday, August 8.

Temwa Chawinga scored the match’s only goal in the 82nd minute.

First Half

Utah generated the match’s first shot seven minutes in, but Claudia Zornoza’s left-footed attempt from distance was blocked.

Zornoza had another chance minutes later as she came up short on two attempts.

Kansas City didn’t take its first attempt until the 25th minute when Imani Dorsey knocked a shot from Debinha away from the line.

Dorsey and KC’s Michelle Cooper traded yellow cards midway through the half as tensions escalated.

The Royals were the marginally better team on paper in a scoreless first half.

Utah outshot Kansas City 4-3 and put two attempts on goal compared to one for the visitors. The Current attempted six corners against one for Utah.

Second Half

Following a trade earlier in the week between the two clubs, former No. 1 overall pick Ally Sentnor came off the bench to start the second half. It was her first appearance with the new team.

Utah’s offensive pressure continued in the early stages of the second half as it pushed up on the Kansas City defenders.

The club was unable to score but seemed to control the pace against the mighty Current.

Kansas City finally broke through in the 82nd minute. Temwa Chawinga beat Mandy McGlynn with a well-placed right-footed chip to grab a 1-0 lead. Kayla Sharples assisted with the goal.

KC held on through six minutes of stoppage time for the 1-0 win.
