BYU-Portland State Football Fan Guide: Game Info, Storylines, Etc.

PROVO, Utah – BYU Cougar football fans can rejoice as the wait is nearly over for the 2025 college football season.

BYU opens the 2025 season by hosting the Portland State Vikings at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday, August 30. The game starts at 6 p.m. MT and will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Portland State is an FCS program and a member of the Big Sky Conference. The Vikings went 3-8 in 2024, finishing tied for sixth in the Big Sky. Portland State is 0-1 in 2025 after suffering a 42-0 loss to Tarleton State in Week Zero.

Game Information

The Cougars and Vikings collide for just the second time. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. MT.

KSL meteorologist Matt Johnson expects gorgeous, mostly sunny weather conditions for kickoff in Provo. Cougar fans will enjoy low 80s temperatures dropping into the low to mid-70s by the fourth quarter.

BYU opened the 2017 season with a 20-6 win over visiting Portland State.

The west ticket booth will open at 1 p.m.

Where does BYU’s Cougar Canyon begin?

Cougar Canyon will occur on the stadium’s West side from 2:30 p.m. MT on game day. Food trucks and activities for all ages will be available. BYUtv’s pregame show, Sports Nation GameDay, and BYU Radio’s Cougar Pregame Live will also be broadcast live from Cougar Canyon.

The Cougar Walk will take place from the north end of Cougar Canyon through the stadium’s southwest corner, starting at 4 p.m. MT.  The Cougar Walk closes at 5:30 p.m. MT.

Stadium gates will open shortly after the Cougar Walk.

What channel is BYU football on?

The BYU football game against Portland State is available on ESPN+. Mike Corey and Brad Hopkins are on the call. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. MT.
