Real Salt Lake Strikes Down Sporting Kansas City At Home

SANDY, Utah – Real Salt Lake grabbed a two-goal lead before hanging on in the closing minutes to earn three points in a 2-1 victory over SKC.

RSL (10-14-4, 34 points) hosted Sporting Kansas City (7-17-6, 27 points) at America First Field on Saturday, September 13.

First Half

Both teams sent shots wide in the opening minutes as each looked for an early spark.

Real Salt Lake committed four fouls in the first 12 minutes as they tried to set an aggressive tone.

The home team created a good opportunity in the 14th minute. Diego Luna found Victor Olatunji near the box, but the forward’s left-footed attempt came up empty.

SKC attempted a ball over the top in the 30th minute that was knocked away harmlessly by the Claret & Cobalt.

Real Salt Lake finally broke through in the 40th minute when Diego Luna found the netting for a 1-0 lead. Zavier Gozo had the assist.

The home team dominated the opening 45. RSL outshot Sporting 10-2 and attempted the only three shots on goal.

Second Half

Sporting Kansas City keeper Joel Pulskamp kept his team within striking distance with a leaping save early in the period.

Luna missed a shot wide seconds later as SKC tried to regain control.

Real Salt Lake struck again when Gozo’s second assist gave Alexandros Katranis near the six-yard box. Katranis touched the ball down before blasting a shot past Pulskamp for a 2-0 lead.

It was Katranis’ first goal since 2024 in Philadelphia.

SKC bounced back almost immediately when a Brayan Vera own-goal cut the lead in half.

RSL held on to the slim advantage through five minutes of stoppage time to earn the regulation win.
