Woods Cross, Bountiful Combine For 38 Penalties In Wildcats Win

WOODS CROSS, Utah – Big plays helped Woods Cross overcome upset-minded Bountiful in a 28-14 Wildcats win.
The Woods Cross Wildcats (4-2) and Bountiful Redhawks (2-4) opened Region 6 play on Friday, September 19.

The two programs combined for 38 penalties, equaling the UHSAA record. They combined for 351 penalty yards.
First Quarter
Bountiful won the toss, opting to defer possession until the second half. Woods Cross made minimal progress on its first drive before giving the football to Bountiful.
Penalties reared their ugly head for the Wildcats, pushing Bountiful deep into the red zone. The Redhawks’ Siaki Fekitoa finished the drive with a run around the edge for the night’s first touchdown.

Woods Cross answered with a powerful running attack and a four-play, 84-yard touchdown drive. Shayden Gerratt reached the end zone on a 21-yard scamper before beating a defender to the pylon.
Gerratt carried twice for 66 yards on the drive.

Both defenses stepped up to force back-to-back punts to end the quarter.
Second Quarter
After a seven-penalty opening 12 minutes, the second period started with a false start against Bountiful, putting the Redhawks into third and long.
The Wildcats took over after a punt. A Bountiful personal foul moved Woods Cross into the red zone early in the period.
A 30-yard field goal gave Woods Cross a 10-7 lead with 8:13 left in the half.
Bountiful began relying on its screen pass attack to move the football. After reaching the red zone, a penalty and poor blocking forced them into a 4th-&-2 situation. The handoff went to Fekitoa, and he was stuffed short of the line to gain, giving the football back to Woods Cross.
The Wildcats kicked a 32-yard field goal to take a 13-7 halftime lead.
Third Quarter
Both schools opened the second half with a punt.
Penalties continued as a large part of the story following 15 first-half flags. Both squads were flagged multiple times early in the third.
With both defenses getting stops on the opposing running game, the third quarter clock expired quickly, and neither team scored.
Fourth Quarter
Midway through the period, Siaki Fekitoa broke an 84-yard run to tie the game at 13. Fekitoa shrugged off a tackle inside the ten-yard line to finish the massive scoring run.
The extra point gave Bountiful a 14-13 lead.

Woods Cross answered with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Eli Bodell. The Wildcats added a two-point conversion to take a 21-14 lead with 7:51 left.

The Wildcats likely put the game out of reach when Marcus Stepan picked off a pass and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown. The extra point gave Woods Cross a 28-14 lead.
Woods Cross held on for the 14-point win.
