BYU Football Progress Report: Colorado Edition

BOULDER, Colo. – BYU overcame its biggest test yet with a 24-21 win at Colorado on Saturday night.

The Cougars are now 4-0 for the second year in a row and one of six Big 12 teams without a loss in conference play.

BYU Football Progress Report: Colorado Edition

After falling behind 14-0 early in the first quarter, BYU responded with 17 points unanswered and allowed Colorado to score just once in their final eight drives.

Offense: B

It wasn’t the cleanest outing for the BYU offense, but they still racked up nearly 400 yards without a turnover.

With Sione Moa sidelined, Bear Bachmeier and LJ Martin stepped up in the backfield. Both carried the ball 15 times—Bachmeier led the team with 98 rushing yards, while Martin added 58 on the ground and 36 through the air. One of the night’s biggest plays came on a 3rd-and-17 scramble by Bachmeier, who picked up 16 yards to set up a 4th-down conversion by Enoch Nawahine. Three plays later, BYU scored what would become the game-winning touchdown.

Top receiver Chase Roberts bounced back from an early drop on 4th down to make several contested catches and score twice. With his second and third touchdowns of the season, he’s now just one shy of his 2024 total.

While 24 points isn’t as explosive as BYU’s early-season showings, the offense put together four scoring drives and had chances for two more—one ended with Will Ferrin’s first missed field goal in 26 tries, and the other saw BYU opt to punt and pin Colorado deep rather than attempt a 51-yarder.

With the way BYU’s defense is playing, 24 points will be enough to win more often than not.

Defense: B

If you take away the first two drives, this was likely another A-minus or even A-level performance from the defense. Colorado scored touchdowns on their opening two possessions, piling up 137 of their 291 total yards in those early drives.

After that, BYU’s defense settled in and made key adjustments, effectively shutting down the Buffs the rest of the way. Jack Kelly and Isaiah Glasker both lived up to their billing as two of BYU’s top defenders. Kelly spent most of the night spying quarterback Kaidon Salter and played a key role in Glasker’s game-sealing interception by bursting into the backfield and forcing a tough throw.

It was also a positive sign to see Oklahoma State transfer Justin Kirkland make his long-awaited BYU debut.

Special Teams: D

Will Ferrin’s streak of 25 straight made kicks came to an end with a miss from 55 yards. The punt return unit also had some puzzling moments—Tiger Bachmeier fair caught a punt inside the five, then fielded another in the end zone and returned it to the six.

For a unit that’s typically reliable, special teams had an off night.

Overall: B

Overall, it was a solid showing in a tough road environment for BYU. Questions about how Bear Bachmeier would handle a Big 12 road test were answered, and the team proved it can respond to adversity. Looking ahead, the Cougars should be heavy favorites at home on a short week against West Virginia and likely favored again at Arizona—setting up a potential Top-25 showdown with Utah on October 18.
