SALT LAKE CITY — The Olympus Titans put forth a tour de force in all three phases, handing the upset-minded Cyprus Pirates a 42-0 drubbing.
Titan QB Preston Ferran threw four touchdown passes, all of which were for 20 yards or more. His outstanding performance included a 91-yard scoring strike to Luke Campbell.
Markilo Allen and Easton Zito bookended the scoring with two-yard rushing TDs for Olympus.
No. 12 Olympus will face No. 5 Woods Cross on Friday, October 31, in the second round.
First Round Recap For 5A Utah High School Football Playoffs
No. 17 Northridge Knights @ No. 16 Pleasant Grove Vikings
The Knights and Vikings battled to a 7-7 halftime draw in a tight contest throughout. Northridge came out of the break strong, scoring on two back-breaking touchdowns.
Dontae Dyson gave Northridge its first lead with a 73-yard rushing score; it was his second TD of the night after a 95-yard kickoff return in the first half. Later in the quarter, Knights QB Andrew Ortiz hooked up with Makai So’o for a 95-yard touchdown pass.
Pleant Groves’s Dexton Nuttall scored a ten-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter.
No. 17 Northridge will face No. 1 West on Friday, October 31, in the second round.
No. 24 Clearfield Falcons @ No. 9 Bountiful Redhawks
Bountiful came out of the gates fast, scoring 28 unanswered points to build a commanding first-half lead. The Redhawks’ lead ballooned to 42 midway through the third quarter. Bountiful finished with a 56-6 victory.
Zeke Murdock and Carter Brooks each scored two touchdowns for Bountiful. QB Hudson Malmrose tossed three TDs.
Landon Hittle scored the Falcons’ only TD on a four-yard rush.
No. 9 Bountiful will face No. 8 West Jordan on Friday, October 31, in the second round.
No. 20 Wasatch Wasps @ No. 13 Timpview Thunderbirds
A pick-six from Tonga Tauteoli and three Cole Engemann touchdown passes lifted the Thunderbirds over the Wasps in a 40-15 blowout. The Thunderbirds built a 27-6 halftime advantage, allowing its defense to shut the door in the second half.
Ben Brand and Cache Coombs scored touchdowns for Wasatch.
No. 13 Timpview will face No. 4 Orem on Friday, October 31, in the second round.
No. 18 Roy Royals @ No. 15 Alta Hawks
A three-win Alta team scored 21 points in each of the first two quarters, essentially putting the game out of reach in the first 24 minutes with a 42-7 halftime advantage. Alta held on to the 49-7 win.
Lucas Pagel caught two touchdown passes and ran for a third to lead the Hawks’ offensive attack. Bennett Coester, Ber Strong, Ryker Ellis, and Evan Morton added touchdowns in the win.
Synic Harvey scored Roy’s only TD of the day.
The No. 15 Alta Hawks will face No. 2 Fremont on Friday, October 31, in the second round.
No. 23 Taylorsville Warriors @ No. 10 Granger Lancers
Granger controlled the action from the opening kick, easing into the playoffs with a 35-0 win over Taylorsville. The Lancers improved to 8-3 with the victory.
No. 10 Granger will face No. 7 Brighton on Friday, October 31, in the second round.
No. 19 Spanish Fork Dons @ No. 14 Hunter Wolverines
Spanish Fork came up with the biggest upset of the evening, toppling Hunter convincingly. The Dons led 42-0 after three quarters, making the final 12 minutes academic. Hunter’s Paul Makaafi added a late touchdown for a 42-7 final score.
James Buck caught two touchdown passes, including a 49-yard catch and run in the first quarter. Nixon Warren crossed the goalline twice on the ground and threw a touchdown pass to Gage Christensen.
No. 19 Spanish Fork will face No. 3 Springville on Friday, October 31, in the second round.
First Round Recap For 6A Utah High School Football Playoffs
No. 17 Cedar Valley Aviators @ No. 16 Layton Lancers
Layton jumped all over Cedar Valley, scoring 28 points before the Aviators even thought about leaving the runway in a 41-16 win. Gavin Hurst and JP Garlick each scored a pair of rushing touchdowns to pace the Lancers.
No. 16 Layton will face No. 1 Corner Canyon on Friday, October 31, in the second round.
