Utah Stumbles In Acrisure Opener, 68-58 To Grand Canyon

SALT LAKE CITY— Utah finally left the Huntsman Center for the first time this season, and the road vibe hit them like an elbow to the jaw. Grand Canyon dictated the terms from the opening tip and never really let go, handing the Utes a 68–58 loss.

Utah showed flashes — a few tough buckets from Don McHenry, defensive spurts that looked like something Alex Jensen could build on — but every step forward was followed by a turnover, a foul, or an empty trip.

That’s a bad recipe anywhere, but especially in a building GCU fans made their home.

Grand Canyon’s quick start set the tone in Acrisure Opener

Utah opened in a 4–0 hole after surrendering a second-chance jumper and then turning the ball over for a transition layup. Terrance Brown briefly stopped the bleeding with a nice right-wing 3-pointer, but the Lopes kept coming downhill.

A blocked layup, a transition and-1, and a runout dunk pushed GCU to an 11–3 lead and forced Utah to steady itself.

A small run helped: Seydou Traore scored on a weak-side cut, then McHenry drilled a pull-up 3-pointer to make it 11–8.

Utah found a groove — temporarily

The Utes began trading blows rather than absorbing them, and by the second media timeout Jacob Patrick had splashed two threes to keep Utah within 17–14.

After a timeout, Utah delivered its stingiest defensive stretch of the season.

The Utes strung together stop after stop, and McHenry carved his way to an up-and-under, then Patrick floated in a lefty teardrop to give Utah its first lead, 18–17. But the momentum never stuck.

Though the defense made a stand, Utah followed those stops with nearly four minutes of scoreless offense themselves, wasting a defensive stand that deserved a payoff. GCU eventually broke its own drought with a dunk at the 3:33 mark.

The final minute didn’t treat Utah kindly either. Brown found James Okonkwo for a late dunk to cut the deficit to 31–28, but another Utah foul and two GCU free throws sent the Utes into the locker room trailing 33–28.

Halftime story: fouls and giveaways

Shooting wasn’t the problem — Utah went 11-of-27, slightly better than GCU’s 11-of-30.

The problem was:

• 6 turnovers → 10 GCU points

• 11 Utah fouls → 14 GCU free throws (11 makes)

Combine that with GCU’s athleticism at the rim, and Utah was playing uphill.

Second half: wheels wobble, then fall off

Both teams opened the half with illegal screens. Utah got one point from a McHenry foul, then immediately gave up a 6–0 GCU run that ballooned the deficit to 39–29 and forced Alex Jensen to burn a timeout.

What followed felt like a microcosm of the night:

• Dawes missed an open three.
• Traore grabbed a rebound but threw the ball away.
• GCU scored at the rim off a Utah turnover.

Utah salvaged a bit with an Okonkwo putback, but the Lopes simply played cleaner, faster, and with more force.

Even Utah’s good moments — Okonkwo’s monster block that sparked a fast break, the Brown-to-Dawes transition dunk, Traore’s top-of-the-key three — were immediately erased by mistakes or defensive breakdowns.

Brown picking up his fourth foul with 8:40 remaining didn’t help, either. By the final media timeout, the Utes trailed 60–46, and the outcome was effectively sealed.

Closing stretch

Utah battled but never mounted a real push. Fouls piled up, turnovers climbed, and the Lopes kept hammering the rim. GCU controlled the game from start to finish and looked like the team that had been there before. Utah, bluntly, didn’t.

Final: Grand Canyon 68, Utah 58

The Utes struggled to play disciplined, clean basketball. The defense had its moments, as the did the scoring, but the overall play still feels disjointed and undisciplined. This sport punishes undisciplined nights, and Utah’s 14 turnovers + 24 fouls was a losing equation long before the final buzzer.
