PK: Utah Couldn’t Have Asked For A Better Start To The Morgan Scalley Era

Utah football head coach Morgan Scalley details first month on the job....

LAS VEGAS – The coach-in-waiting (and waiting and waiting) tag attached to Morgan Scalley lingered for years but not even the wildest imagination could have concocted the way the label got removed.

Instead of hobnobbing in balmy Florida, where his new team lost in the Citrus Bowl game, Kyle Whittingham was supposed to put his tough-guy mentality on display one last time as Utah’s football coach. But just like with the new coach timeline, this plan exploded in shocking fashion.

Whittingham dearly departed, transitioning from 21 years at the helm for the Utes to take the same role at the far greater glamorous Michigan.

In a metaphorical split second, which may have even seemed literal to him, Scalley suddenly became Utah’s boss.

Forget about using the next several months to prepare for his first rookie season as a head coach, Scalley assumed command immediately. All that waiting abruptly crashed once Michigan made an offer Whittingham couldn’t refuse.

Without further ado, viva Scalley, who is now king of Utah’s football program. Expect him to be his own man, not an impersonation of Whittingham.

Scalley probably would have liked an easier hand to make a debut, preferably a long offseason and a lower division opponent that FBS teams usually crush to open a season. But the cards he was dealt dictated the Utes play the Big 10’s Nebraska in the Las Vegas Bowl at Allegiant Stadium.

Overcoming early struggles on defense, which allowed two touchdown drives in the first quarter, Utah took control on both sides of the ball and won 44-22 on Wednesday before a crowd of 38,879 (the largest since moving to the Raiders stadium in 2019).

The Utes, who finished an impressive 11-2 and will end nationally ranked, secured their first bowl win since 2017 and only the fourth 11-win season in program history.

The new coach’s inaugural win was as impressive as any the Utes had this season. They rolled up 535 yards of total offense, with game MVP Devon Dampier uncharacteristically passing for 310 yards (he also ran for 148 yards).

“Just grateful for it all,” Dampier said. “Grateful for coach Scalley and the way he kept it all together.”

So now, the torch is officially passed to Scalley, whose task is to get Utah to consistently compete for the Big 12 championship and a spot in the national playoffs. As with any coach at every level, predictions on Scalley are nothing more than opinions and guesses.

“I’m confident in the future,” he said.

Like Whittingham, who left as Utah’s winningest coach, the qualifications are there. At age 46, one year older than when Whittingham got the job, Scalley worked his way up the ladder before serving for a decade as the defensive coordinator – mirroring the career path of his former boss.

However, the only certainty is his love for the program. Scalley exemplifies the Utah Man designation, dating back to his childhood up through his playing career at Highland High and as a stalwart defensive back for the Utes that included serving as a captain on the undefeated Fiesta Bowl team in 2004. He was a diehard first, a fact no other Utah coach in modern times can claim.

“I grew up a Utah man,” he said. “My dream has always been to take it to the highest level. The one thing I’m grateful for is my logo has never changed.”

Scalley also doesn’t have to fake any hatred for fellow Big 12 member BYU, unlike how Whittingham is now required to do with Michigan rival Ohio State. He said as much in a video that got out of him as a player talking to his teammates 21 years ago.

And don’t worry about the admitted racial slur he mistakenly sent to a recruit in 2013. The horrendous lapse in judgment, for which there was no excuse, was completely out of character. The temporary loss of his coach-in-waiting status and significant pay cut paled in comparison to the humbling blow to his reputation and character.

None of it matters now, anyway. For Scalley, the future has turned into the present.
