Are People Sleeping On Ace Bailey In His Rookie Season?

Mar 6, 2026, 1:26 PM | Updated: 1:27 pm

After dropping a career-high 32 points against Washington last night, Utah Jazz rookie Ace Bailey finally broke into the national conversation.

But the performance raises a larger question: has Bailey’s rookie season been flying under the radar?

In one word? Yes. But there are several factors that explain why.

Let’s take a look at some of the reasons, and then what we’ve actually seen from the Rutgers wing over the first 56 games of his NBA career.

The Rookie Ladder

Maybe the biggest factor that has led to Bailey being lost in the shuffle nationally is simple: the 2025 draft class is off to a historic start.

Cooper Flagg has proven to be a franchise guy already. Dylan Harper is a key contributor on one of the top teams in the West. Kon Knueppel has done the impossible task of making the Charlotte Hornets competitive. The list goes on.

But not every good rookie season can drive the conversation. This dynamic isn’t new.

In 2003, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony controlled the spotlight from the start. Meanwhile, the fifth pick, Dwyane Wade, quietly put together a stellar rookie season in Miami before emerging as one of the league’s brightest young stars soon after.

The Stats

On the national scale, there isn’t enough bandwidth to talk about every player, and there isn’t enough time to watch every game.

As a result, box scores and averages dictate the talking points.

Flagg is averaging 20 a night. Knueppel set the rookie record for threes in a season. Those are the numbers that get priority over Bailey averaging 12.4 points.

But that’s where the problem lies. What Bailey has shown goes much deeper than points, rebounds, and assists.

What Ace Bailey Is Actually Showing

Coming out of Rutgers, Bailey was a consensus top-five pick on the back of his tough shot-making, scoring prowess, and lengthy frame.

However, early in his rookie season, that wasn’t what was highlighted. The rebounding, passing, and effort on defense led to Bailey entering the starting lineup less than a month after his professional debut.

The scoring didn’t come slowly because of a lack of ability. The Jazz brass had a clear plan for introducing Bailey into the lineup. To this day, Bailey still doesn’t meet the 10-possession isolation threshold required for NBA.com tracking.

Contrary to other rookies and even previous first-year players in Utah, Bailey hasn’t been thrown into the fire. His induction into the league has been slow and calculated.

Head coach Will Hardy recently spoke about both Bailey’s game and the deliberate approach to his rookie season.

I think he deserves more recognition. We’re helping him attack strategically based on how he’s being defended. You can see his basketball IQ in his passing, screening, and on defense.

As the Jazz transition toward a postseason focus next season, Bailey has already cemented himself as both a piece of the future and a starting-caliber player.

Utah will continue to loosen the leash, and Bailey will continue to grow. The patient approach has already paid dividends.

And if Bailey’s rookie season has been overlooked, the next step in his development may make that impossible.
