SALT LAKE CITY – Goaltender Sebastian Cossa is headed to the Utah Mammoth in a draft-day acquisition with the Detroit Red Wings.

Utah receives the 23-year-old goaltender in exchange for the 23rd overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

“We are thrilled to add another big, athletic goaltender to our organization,” said Bill Armstrong, general manager of the Utah Mammoth. “Sebastian is a talented goalie and we are excited to see what he can accomplish with our club.”

It was the second trade of the day for Armstrong.

Utah acquired the draft capital necessary for the trade by sending winger JJ Peterka to the Boston Bruins for two first-round picks earlier in the day.

The 2026 NHL Draft first round is taking place on Friday, June 26. Rounds 2-7 will be held on Saturday, June 27.

Who is Sebastian Cossa?

Cossa was the 2021 first-round pick (15th overall) of the Red Wings. He was the first goaltender selected in the first round by Detroit since Tom McCollum in 2008.

The 6’6″, 221-pound goalie comes to Utah with a 70-33-19 career record in the AHL. He has a 2.44 GAA and a .911 save percentage in 123 regular-season games with Grand Rapids.

He went 26-8-4 with a 2.33 GAA and five shutouts in 2025-26 with the Griffins.

He played alongside current Mammoth forward Dylan Guenther while with the Edmonton Oil Kings (2019-22).

Cossa made his NHL debut on December 9, 2024. He stopped 12 of 14 shots to earn his first career win.
