Mora’s brace leaves Portland with come-from-behind win over Real Salt Lake

PORTLAND, Ore. — Real Salt Lake’s post-World Cup struggles continued Saturday night.

Many of them were self-inflicted.

Felipe Mora tallied a second-half brace in his final appearance with Portland as the Timbers rallied for a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake at Providence Park.

Juan Manuel Sanabria gave Salt Lake (8-6-2, 26 points) an early lead, but it was short-lived as the visitors dropped a second result during a three-match road trip.

“To concede two goals on set pieces is really poor,” RSL manager Pablo Mastroeni told reporters after the match. “Our zone on the front line did a really poor job of attacking the ball, and left a very dangerous player to knock two in. Games are always going to show you where you need improvement … and these set pieces kind of reared their head. It’s the easier thing to defend when you’re down a man.

“If you’re going to take anything, it’s going to be set pieces just because you can prepare for it.”

Mora scored three goals and an assist in his final three matches for the Timbers, who out-shot Real Salt lake 25-7 with seven shots on target in what the club confirmed to be the forward’s final appearance in green and gold.

Even Noel Caliskan, who played in Portland in 2023 before joining Real Monarchs and eventually signing a multi-year contract extension with RSL through at least the 2028-29 season, gave the Chilean striker respect after Saturday’s match.

“This one obviously hurts a little more for me personally, too. I was drafted here, and the year we came here and won was nice,” Caliskan admitted.

“I think we are still a very good team; we’ve shown that,” he added. “It’s just, like, two games that didn’t go our way. I think against LAFC, we had a very good performance and lost the boxes. And today, you play down a man for 60 minutes. We can’t get too low after a loss, and stay the course. We have a lot of games left to play.”

It started well enough for the visitors.

Sanabria opened his MLS account with superb goal, made only better by Morgan Guilavogui’s through-ball into the left side of the penalty area in the 18th minute to put the visitors in front early.

“We had a lot of good looks on goal,” Mastroeni said of the first 30 minutes that gave RSL the lead. “And defensively, I thought we were really solid.”

But less than 15 minutes after the designated player’s sixth assist of the season, Guilavogui was sent off with a red card for violent conduct when he kicked out his leg and connected with Portland’s Jimer Fory.

“What they said was he reached out his foot and hit the guy in the face. If that’s the case, it’s a tough position to put the rest of the group in,” Mastroeni said of the red card. “There’s emotions in the game, and we’ve got to be able to maintain our poise. That’s what life is; it happens, and then you have to adapt.”

In a bit over 900 minutes scattered over 14 matches including 11 starts, Guilavogui has six goals and one assist, as well as 17 fouls, four yellow cards and Saturday’s red-card offense.

That left Salt Lake playing down a man from the 31st minute of the second of three-straight road matches of the club’s return from the FIFA men’s World Cup break in June.

In addition to missing next week’s match at St. Louis City SC, the Guinean international will also be one yellow card from a mandatory suspension for yellow-card accumulation once RSL returns from Leagues Cup beginning Aug. 15 against Minnesota United.

That helped the Timbers out-shoot Salt Lake 10-4 in the first half, though only one of those shots was on target.

Even so, Kristoffer Velde appeared to equalize for Portland in the first minute of first-half stoppage time. But the Norwegian winger’s volley off Rafael Cabral’s save was ruled offside.

Instead, Mora connected on a 56th-minute header from Ariel Lassiter to equalize in perhaps the most poetic goal at Providence Park.

The 32-year-old Chilean striker is reportedly expected to return to Liga MX with Atlético San Luis. But Portland confirmed to local media that Saturday’s match will mark his final appearance in a Timbers jersey, according to KATU.

The goal off a corner kick was Mora’s 47th regular-season marker since joining MLS, ranking third among the franchise. His 66 goal contributions is fourth among all-time Timbers in the MLS era.

He wasn’t done, though.

Mora finished inside the far post in the 67th minute, giving Portland its first lead of the night with a snap header off an in-swinging corner from Velde.

The Timbers out-shot Salt Lake by 18 including seven shots on target. But Victor Olatunji was on the verge of an equalizer in the first minute of second-half stoppage time before his goal was ruled offside by the assistant referee.

“Those are the hair-line moments that definite games,” Mastroeni said. “Unfortunately for us, it didn’t go our way tonight.”
