SANDY — Real Salt Lake ended the MLS secondary transfer window with one of the league’s largest pools of roster-building currency still available.

RSL has $2.56 million in available general allocation money, according to roster profiles released Thursday by Major League Soccer. That is the fifth-highest total among the league’s 30 clubs, trailing only Philadelphia, Minnesota, St. Louis and San Jose.

It also puts a number on something RSL emphasized throughout a busy summer transfer window: flexibility.

Salt Lake transferred 19-year-old All-Star Zavier Gozo to Crystal Palace for a reported club-record $15 million, traded Nelson Palacio to Toronto FC for $1.1 million with another $550,000 potentially available through incentives, and sent Pablo Ruiz to the LA Galaxy for $400,000 in 2027 GAM.

The club did reinvest during the window, but largely through moves that limited its long-term commitment.

RSL acquired Saba Lobjanidze from Atlanta United for $625,000 in guaranteed GAM, with another $100,000 potentially due if he re-signs, and Jason Shokalook from Chicago for $150,000 guaranteed with another $50,000 possible through incentives.

Colin Guske arrived on loan from Orlando for $50,000 in GAM with an option for RSL to acquire him permanently. Taylor Booth joined on loan from FC Twente with a purchase option, while Canadian international defender Luc de Fougerolles arrived on loan from Fulham.

Dusan Zagar, a 19-year-old Serbian winger, was the club’s most significant long-term developmental addition, signing permanently as a U22 Initiative player.

Spotrac described RSL as one of the summer’s biggest financial winners following the close of the window, calling its business “exceptional asset creation accompanied by a short-term competitive cost.”

That second part has become increasingly relevant.

Gozo left as one of RSL’s leading scorers, and the club did not replace him with a proven MLS goalscorer. Injuries have since further depleted a roster fighting to get back into the playoff race.

But MLS’s newly released numbers show Salt Lake emerged from its summer business with substantial resources still available.

GAM no longer comes with the same expiration date

Holding more than $2.5 million in GAM in mid-September does not necessarily mean RSL has $2.5 million it needs to spend before the end of the year.

Under MLS’s current roster rules, for the most part GAM no longer expires. The exception is the additional allocation money clubs receive by selecting the U22 Initiative Player Model before the season, which must be used by the Oct. 9 roster freeze.

Clubs can sign out-of-contract free agents until the roster freeze, even though the secondary transfer window has closed.

GAM no longer expiring could become important with MLS approaching one of the most unusual roster-building periods in league history.

The league will play a shortened 2027 Sprint season before transitioning to a summer-to-spring calendar beginning in 2027-28. MLS will also enter that transition under new leadership following commissioner Don Garber’s previously announced departure.

RSL is operating under the U22 initiative player model, which allows clubs to use up to two designated player spots and four U22 Initiative spots while providing up to an additional $2 million in GAM.

Justen Glad and Morgan Guilavogui occupy RSL’s two designated player spots, although Glad’s contract could have been bought down if RSL had chosen to sign another Designated Player this summer. Juan Jose Arias, Dominik Marczuk, Ariath Piol and Zagar occupy its four U22 spots.

MLS allowed clubs to change roster construction models during the secondary window under certain conditions, but RSL remained with the 2-DP, 4-U22 structure.

New loan rules add another option

Changes to MLS’s loan rules have created another way for clubs to maintain that flexibility.

Incoming loans no longer have to include a purchase option, opening the door to temporary deals that might not previously have fit league roster regulations.

De Fougerolles is one example of the possibilities created by that change.

RSL acquired the 20-year-old center back from Fulham on loan through the remainder of the season with an option to extend the loan through the 2027 Sprint season. Fulham retains the ability to recall him.

Rather than requiring either club to commit to a permanent transfer structure, the move gives RSL a young defender with World Cup experience while allowing Fulham to retain long-term control of the player.

Booth and Guske, meanwhile, arrived on loans that do contain purchase options, giving RSL the ability to evaluate both before deciding whether to make larger commitments.

Palacio deal takes an unexpected turn

Salt Lake traded Palacio to Toronto on July 6 for $1.1 million guaranteed, with another $550,000 available through performance incentives. The midfielder had spent the previous season on loan with FC Zürich.

Palacio passed Toronto’s medical after arriving but never appeared in a match for the club.

Toronto general manager Jason Hernandez said last week that Palacio arrived with minor issues following his season in Europe but passed the club’s medical before suffering setbacks as Toronto attempted to integrate him into training.

Palacio underwent thigh surgery Tuesday and will miss the remainder of the season, Toronto announced Wednesday.

Later Wednesday, multiple Toronto outlets reported that the club and longtime chief medical officer Dr. Ira Smith had mutually agreed to part ways.

There has been no indication that Smith’s departure was directly related to Palacio’s situation. The timing, however, came after Hernandez publicly raised questions about Toronto’s medical processes while discussing Palacio’s inability to get on the field.

So RSL received a guaranteed seven-figure return for a player who had spent the previous season away from Utah and will not play for his new club this season.

Flexibility, but for what?

RSL’s remaining GAM balance does not answer the larger question surrounding its summer window.

It sharpens it.

Philadelphia leads MLS with $4.67 million available, followed by Minnesota at $4.32 million, St. Louis at $4.06 million and San Jose at $3.69 million. RSL is next at $2.56 million.

After a summer in which RSL sold its most valuable young player, moved other veterans and largely favored loans, young players and option-based deals over another major permanent acquisition, it still possesses one of the largest available GAM balances in MLS.

With GAM generally carrying forward, a shortened Sprint season approaching and a new league calendar on the horizon, that money does not have to be spent simply because it is there.

RSL still has flexibility. At some point, the question becomes what it is willing to spend it on.

Whatever comes next, RSL has something most MLS clubs don’t: more than $2.5 million in available GAM.
