SANDY — Real Salt Lake was already running out of bodies.

The situation got worse this week.

Juan Jose Arias injured his hamstring in Saturday’s 2-0 loss to New York City FC, with head coach Pablo Mastroeni saying the defender will likely miss around eight weeks.

Lukas Engel, who injured his hamstring three days earlier in Houston, is facing a similar absence of six to eight weeks.

Diego Luna had surgery Friday morning in Los Angeles, with early estimates putting his return at six months.

New Under-22 Initiative signing Dusan Zagar is still unable to travel to the United States pending his work visa.

And World Cup veteran Luc de Fougerolles, acquired on loan from Fulham earlier this month to bolster RSL’s central defense, is also still waiting on his visa.

“I’d like to say ‘next guy up,’ but we’re slowly running out of guys,” Mastroeni said after the NYCFC loss.

Now the Western Conference leaders are coming to town.

Vancouver visits America First Field on Saturday night led by Brian White, Ryan Gauld and German star Thomas Müller.

The Whitecaps sit 3 points clear at the top of the conference and have at least one match in hand on every other team currently in a playoff spot. Their +30 goal differential leads MLS.

RSL, meanwhile, enters Saturday still searching for its first MLS victory since May 16.

Its league winless streak reached 11 matches against NYCFC despite Salt Lake outshooting the visitors 15-6 and putting six attempts on target. USMNT goalkeeper Matt Freese stopped all six as NYCFC turned three shots on target into two goals.

It continued a pattern Mastroeni believes offers reason to stick with what RSL is doing despite the results.

“We can talk about what I’d like to do, but if we’re creating better chances than our opponents in the last three games, it’s not the system, right?” Mastroeni said.

“If we were getting outshot or our xG was extremely low, I would say, ‘We’ve gotta change something.’”

Instead, Mastroeni said the focus remains on improving the moments that have decided games, particularly inside both penalty areas.

“From a structural standpoint, it just doesn’t scream, ‘Let’s change everything,’” he said. “It’s, ‘Let’s continue to fine-tune the areas of the field that are the most important,’ which are the boxes.”

Depth tested

There was at least some encouraging news at training this week.

Griffin Dillon, who fractured his right foot Aug. 1 at St. Louis and underwent surgery four days later, was seen jogging along the sideline for the first time Friday morning.

Sam Junqua has cleared concussion protocol and returned to training, while Stijn Spierings also trained as he works his way back from a high ankle sprain.

Emeka Eneli was available off the bench against NYCFC, and Taylor Booth made his RSL debut in the second half after joining the club on loan from FC Twente earlier this month.

Booth played 14 minutes plus stoppage time and said afterward he felt ready for more.

“I felt good,” Booth said. “Obviously the altitude is not the easiest, but that’s what we’ve been pushing really hard for in training the last 10 days, just to get me adapted as quick as possible.”

The signs of progress come at a time when Mastroeni’s available options have become increasingly scarce.

Vancouver faces quick turnaround

Vancouver arrives in Utah on short rest after being eliminated from the Canadian Championship semifinals Wednesday night. The Whitecaps drew CF Montréal 1-1 in the opening leg before losing 2-1 in Montreal, sending them out 3-2 on aggregate.

The trip means Vancouver will play Saturday at altitude three days after a midweek match more than 2,000 miles away. Müller and Gauld both started Wednesday, while White entered at halftime.

But Vancouver still brings plenty of high-end roster investment to Utah.

Müller and Gauld occupy the Whitecaps’ two designated player spots, while Vancouver has four U22 Initiative players in Kenji Cabrera, Bruno Caicedo, Aleksa Cvetkovic and Edier Ocampo. Cabrera is unavailable with a season-ending injury.

That investment has helped produce one of MLS’ most dangerous attacks. White leads Vancouver with 15 goals, while Müller has seven goals and seven assists.

RSL will hope the travel and quick turnaround provide an opportunity against a Vancouver team that has spent the season near the top of MLS.

But while Salt Lake has been creating openings lately, finishing them has been another matter.

Mastroeni said after the NYCFC loss that RSL had created enough opportunities to score first in three consecutive matches. Against Vancouver, doing so could be particularly important for a team that has spent nearly four months trying to change its momentum.

“You score that first goal, they start to feel the energy in the building,” Mastroeni said. “If you don’t capitalize in those moments, you leave it to chance as to whether or not you’re gonna be able to get that momentum again.”
