CINCINNATI — Morgan Scalley had Utah ready to play, and Cincinnati spent the first half paying for it.

With questions about a possible letdown surrounding their road trip, the Utes delivered an emphatic opening statement. They scored touchdowns on their first four offensive possessions, added two defensive scores and built a 42–6 halftime lead at Nippert Stadium.

Utah finished with a 49–25 victory Saturday, improving to 8–0 overall and 5–0 in Big 12 play. An uneven second half gave the Utes plenty to correct, but their dominant start and contributions from emerging playmakers provided more than enough separation.

Scalley Has Utah Ready From the Start

The first two possessions established the terms of the afternoon.

Utah’s defense forced an opening three-and-out. Its offense followed with a 12-play, 78-yard touchdown drive, patiently working down the field before Devon Dampier found Hunter Andrews for a 4-yard score.

When Cincinnati answered with a field goal, the Utes put together another touchdown possession, traveling 75 yards and finishing with Wayshawn Parker’s 13-yard run. Utah led 14–3 after the first quarter and had already shown it could sustain drives and finish them.

That early execution reflected a team prepared for the assignment. Dampier completed 15 of 16 first-half passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns, while Utah rushed for 193 yards. The offense produced 328 yards without punting, and the defense accelerated the separation with touchdown returns by Rabbit Evans and Elijah Davis.

Utah finished with 534 total yards, including 268 on the ground. Dampier completed 22 of 29 passes for 260 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, adding 45 rushing yards. Parker led the rushing effort with 82 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.

Bray and Andrews Add More Answers

Daniel Bray and Hunter Andrews gave Utah more ways to move the ball, score and eventually pull itself out of its third-quarter lull.

Bray supplied an immediate spark with an 18-yard run on Utah’s first offensive play. He later broke a 30-yard touchdown run and caught a 3-yard scoring pass, giving him two touchdowns before halftime.

Bray finished with 75 yards on eight carries and another 16 yards on two receptions. His contribution extended beyond finishing drives: a 13-yard reception opened Utah’s late third-quarter touchdown possession.

Andrews was involved throughout the afternoon. His 14-yard catch on third-and-5 extended the opening drive, which he finished with his first touchdown reception.

His second score provided Utah’s answer after Cincinnati cut the lead to 42–19. Facing third-and-7, Dampier found Andrews over the middle for a 59-yard touchdown that pushed the margin back to 30 points.

Andrews finished with five catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns. Together, he and Bray accounted for four of Utah’s five offensive touchdowns.

Their production gave the offense another valuable layer. Bray provided explosive running and a receiving option out of the backfield, while Andrews delivered chain-moving catches and the long touchdown Utah needed to regain its rhythm.

Third Down Gives Utah an Edge

Utah’s first-half efficiency was especially apparent when a possession reached third down.

The Utes converted all four opportunities, finding different answers along the way. Andrews moved the chains with a reception, Dampier extended a drive with an 11-yard scramble, and Parker contributed both a touchdown run and a third-down catch.

Those conversions helped Utah turn all four first-half offensive possessions into touchdowns. Cincinnati went 3-for-7 on third down during the half, with Utah’s stops forcing a punt and field-goal attempts.

The final advantage remained substantial: Utah finished 7-for-11, compared with Cincinnati’s 3-for-11. Andrews’ 59-yard touchdown was the clearest example of the Utes turning a potential drive-ending situation into something much bigger.

Utah held Cincinnati without a conversion on all four of its second-half third downs and stopped both of the Bearcats’ official fourth-down attempts. Those stops included a fourth-quarter stand after a Utah fumble gave Cincinnati possession near midfield.

The Defense Turns Takeaways Into Touchdowns

Utah’s defense helped turn an early advantage into a first-half rout by finishing both of its takeaways in the end zone.

Early in the second quarter, Ethan Day forced a Gi’Bran Payne fumble that Rabbit Evans collected and returned 51 yards for a touchdown. Cincinnati had crossed midfield looking to answer Utah’s second offensive score. Instead, the Utes stretched their lead to 21–3.

Elijah Davis delivered the second defensive touchdown with a 39-yard interception return in the final minute of the half. His score came just 24 seconds after Bray’s touchdown reception and pushed Utah’s lead to 42–6.

The Utes also finished with three sacks and six tackles for loss. Cincinnati still produced 456 yards, so this was a defensive performance with room for improvement. But Utah’s ability to turn two possessions into immediate points changed the game before halftime.

The Second Half Leaves Plenty to Correct

Utah’s urgency and execution slipped after halftime, and Cincinnati outscored the Utes 19–7 over the final two quarters.

The first four Utah possessions of the third quarter ended with a punt, turnover on downs, a pick-six and another punt. Jacob Finley’s 79-yard interception return erased a Utah scoring opportunity, and the Utes managed only 12 rushing yards in the quarter.

A fourth-down pass-interference penalty also kept Cincinnati’s next touchdown drive alive. Cole Tabb scored on a 48-yard run one play later, cutting the deficit to 42–19 before Andrews supplied Utah’s answer.

The fourth quarter brought a different personnel context, with Byrd Ficklin handling the offense. Utah’s final possession consumed 6:42 but ended with a failed fourth-down run near the goal line. The Utes scored on one of seven second-half possessions and committed two turnovers after the break.

That uneven finish did not undo a convincing road victory. It did leave Scalley with clear examples of the execution Utah needs to sustain after establishing control.
