Syracuse Downs Westlake With Dramatic, Last-Second Field Goal

SYRACUSE, Utah – A high-scoring first half turned into a second half defensive battle with Syracuse prevailing on a last-second, 36-yard field goal to win 31-28.
The Syracuse Titans hosted the Westlake Thunder in the Game Night Live Game of the Week on Friday, October 31.

First Quarter
Westlake took the opening kick and used a potent rushing attack to reach Titan territory.
After a nearly six-minute-long drive, senior QB Bosten Fountaine connected with Malik Sika on the short slant for a touchdown.

Syracuse came right back with its own scoring drive. Junior QB Ledger Wight completed a long pass to get the Titans within striking distance.
Two plays later, freshman running back Kao Prom used a speed burst to get around the edge before diving to the pylon, evening the game 7-7.

Syracuse got the football back and wasted no time striking again. Wight broke several tackles on a nearly 40-yard gain to reach the red zone. He finished the drive with a touchdown pass to Ryker Van Komen.

Second Period
Westlake drove deep into Syracuse territory before settling for a 32-yard field goal attempt. The kick sailed wide right, keeping the Titans in front 14-7.
The Thunder stole momentum back when Wight threw an ill-advised interception to Finn Mouer. Mouer returned the football into the red zone.
Fountaine came on and tossed a touchdown pass that Sika high-pointed in the end zone to tie the game at 14.

The high-scoring first half continued with Fountaine and Sika hooking up for the duo’s third touchdown of the half.
The extra point tied the game at 21 with 2:44 left.
Westlake forced a fumble and fell on it to get one final possession before halftime.

The Thunder drove to the one-yard line before Mason Tapusoa pounded across the goal line for a 28-21 Westlake lead.
Third Quarter
Both defenses stepped up, forcing punts to open the second half following some locker room adjustments.
On their second possession of the period, Syracuse drove the length of the field before Ryker Van Komen scored his second TD of the day to tie the game at 28.

Fourth Quarter
The Syracuse defense forced Westlake into a turnover on downs to begin the final quarter.
Syracuse missed a 44-yard field goal to keep matters tied at 28 with 9:02 left.
Westlake gave the football back on a deep interception over the middle. Following a personal foul, the Titans started their possession deep in their own end.
Syracuse looked to have a long field goal attempt available with less than a minute left, but went for it on 4th and 2, converting the first down on a QB keeper around the edge.
The Titans advanced to the next round with a game-winning field goal to win 31-28.
