BYU Alumni & Former Masters Champion Mike Weir In Clubhouse After Promising Opening Round

SALT LAKE CITY – BYU alumni Mike Weir has entered the clubhouse after a promising round of two-over-par to begin his Masters campaign.
Weir, 51, who now plays on the PGA Champions Tour, made a double bogey on the opening hole in the rain after missing both the fairway and green in regulation.
He quickly turned his round around on the short par 4 3rd hole when he made a wonderful five-foot birdie putt following a wonderful bunker shot that spun back to the flagstick.
Weir would go on to make nothing but pars for seven holes before his first bogey of the day came on the par 4 11th. He found the fairway off the tee before spraying his second shot short and right of the green. His third shot spun back below the pin and his par putt was left short. A tap-in bogey pushed Weir to two-over-par.

Amen Corner did not get off to a good start for the 2003 Masters champion.

Weir responded with a very impressive birdie on the challenging par 3 12th hole when his tee shot dropped below the cup leaving him with a six-foot look at birdie that he was able to capitalize on.
The final par 3 of the day proved challenging for Weir who pulled his tee shot off the tee and into the greenside bunker on the 16th hole. His second shot from the sand raced across the green brushing by the flagstick and trickling into the opposite bunker. His second attempt from the sand and third shot was perfectly weighted to two feet which he tapped in for bogey.
Overall, it was an impressive opening round of golf for Weir who entered the clubhouse just two-over-par.
Weir hit 9/18 greens in regulation, 12/14 fairways in regulation, and averaged 1.56 putts per hole with just one three-putt on the day.
Weir will tee off at 9:18 a.m. on Friday with the hope of making the cut. He will be playing alongside Padraig Harrington and the amateur Austin Greaser.
