BYU promotes longtime assistant Todd Miller as next men’s golf coach

PROVO — BYU didn’t wait long or go far to find its next men’s golf head coach.

The Cougars announced Friday the promotion of longtime assistant and director of golf Todd Miller to be the third head coach in program history, succeeding retiring coach Bruce Brockbank.

Miller spent his entire collegiate golfing and coaching career at BYU, coaching under Brockbank for 21 of his 34 seasons leading the program including 14 as director of golf. The formal transition will take place in July.

The son of former BYU All-American, PGA Tour legend and NBC golf analyst Johnny Miller played for BYU beginning in 1998 and finished his playing career in 2005, with a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chile. The former All-American honorable mention in 2004 totaled three top-five finishes, five top-10 marks and seven top-15 placements in 42 career events in college before stepping into the coaching role.

His brothers Scott and Andy also played for the Cougars, the latter of whom was a four-time All-American before turning pro in 2000. The Miller family continued its legacy at BYU most recently when Simon Kwon, the former Skyline High standout and Utah state amateur champion who started at Cal, recently finished the final two seasons of his college career in Provo.

“I am humbled by this unique opportunity to be a head coach at Brigham Young University,” Miller said. “For the past 21 years, I’ve watched Bruce Brockbank recruit, coach and love our golfers, and now I get the privilege to step into that role.

“I am passionate about BYU because of the impact the coaches, athletic department and the university had in my personal life,” he added in a statement from the team. “My desire is to create an environment where our student-athletes can grow spiritually and succeed in their academics while competing at the highest level in collegiate athletics. Our goal will be to win another national championship, and I feel like we have the support from our department, our donors and our alumni to accomplish it.”

As an assistant coach and director of golf, Miller helped the Cougars to 41 tournament victories including four conference championships and the 2025 NCAA Reno regional title. In all, seven of his teams advanced to the NCAA championship with two top-15 finishes, 14 All-Americans and 22 Academic All-Americans.

Miller played a critical role in BYU’s recruiting efforts, including notably landing the pledge of freshman rising star Kihei Akina out of Lone Peak High School. Akina, last year’s Utah Open champion whose older brother Keanu also played golf at BYU, was the highest-rated recruit in program history before earning Big 12 freshman of the year and Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman honors en route to a top-10 finish at the NCAA championship in his first season of collegiate golf.

“We are excited to announce Todd Miller as our new head men’s golf coach,” BYU athletic director Brian Santiago said in a statement. “He has been mentored by one of the best coaches in the business, Bruce Brockbank, and is ready to lead our golf program into the future. Todd is an ambassador for the game of golf and will be a great teacher and mentor for our incredible student athletes. The future is bright.”

Miller and his wife Shannon met during his sophomore season in 1999, and are the parents of four children.
