Tony Finau Exits 89th Masters After Failing To Make Cut

AUGUSTA, Georgia- Round two didn’t go Tony Finau’s way as he missed the cut at the Masters for the first time, finishing the second round at four over for the tournament.

Tony Finau took part in the second round of the 2025 Masters on Friday, April 11.

Justin Rose heads into the weekend leading the field at -8. Bryson DeChambeau (-4) and Rory McIlroy (-6) put themselves in championship contention, ending Thursday behind Rose on the leaderboard.

Finau’s 89th Masters Round Two

Front Nine

Finau opened the second day impressively after a disastrous finish closed the opening round.

The Salt Lake native parred the first seven holes, setting the stage for a birdie on the par-five eighth. Finau split the fairway with a 315-yard tee shot, leaving himself 234 yards to the pin.

Facing an uphill lie, Finau left his second shot 22 yards from the pin, just shy of the fringe. He chipped his third shot within inches of the cup, tapping in for his first birdie of the day.

Finau closed the front nine with his eighth par.

Back Nine

The back nine began the way it ended on Thursday, with Finau bogeying the tenth hole. A 305-yard drive left the 35-year-old 201 yards short of the pin.

After reaching the edge of the green on his second shot, Finau three-putted for his first bogey of the round.

Another bogey on 11 dropped Finau two shots below the projected cut line.

After settling down with par on 12, Finau got a stroke back after birdying the thirteenth hole. His tee shot split the narrow treeline before settling into the fairway 296 yards away. Finau’s second shot carried the green, setting up a two-putt for bird.

Finau’s tee shot on 17 hugged the trees, setting up a difficult second shot. A 116-yard wedge landed in a bunker on the front edge of the green. His sand shot set up a makable par, but Finau’s first putt lipped out for bogey.

The round ended with a par on 18, allowing Finau to finish with a +1 73.

Tony Finau In Past Masters

2025 makes this year’s Masters Tony Finau’s eighth.

His first go at Augusta National was in 2018, where he broke on the scene, finishing T-10.

The following year, in 2019, Tony’s best finish in the tournament was at T-5. He also posted his best-ever round at Augusta National, a 64 on Saturday.

Since then, Fianu has had a hard time staying in contention for when Championship Sunday rolls around. In 2021, he finished T-10 again, but in every other year, he hasn’t touched the top 25.

Last year, in 2024, Tony finished the worst he has ever done at The Masters at T-55 and is looking to bounce back this year.

Despite some tougher years at Augusta, Tony Finau has made the cut in all seven Masters that he has participated in, which is an accomplishment in and of itself.
