SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tony Finau has made the cut at the PGA Championship after posting an even-par second round early on Friday morning. His local companion, Joe Summerhays, was not as fortunate as he was sent home after struggling through the first two rounds.

Finau Fights

Finau began the front nine on the 10th tee, in which he made par on every hole to make the turn at even par. Then Finau’s first birdie fell on the par 4 1st hole after he stuck his approach to 10 ft and buried the putt.

Unfortunately, Finau made bogey on the par 3 5th after he missed a 5-foot putt to save par.

But, after driving the golf ball into the left rough, Finau hit an iron to 10 feet on the par 5 7th hole. He drained the putt for eagle and climbed the leaderboard.

Poor Finish For Finau

Then, the par 3 8th hole is the easiest par 3 on the golf course and Finau failed to hit the green. Instead, he left himself with a 58-foot chip which he left 11 feet short. He missed the putt and surrendered another shot to bring him back into positive digits at one-over-par on the tournament.

On the final hole of the second round, Finau found the right rough and left himself with 202 yards to the flag. He hit his approach well short of the green, only for it to bounce and run past the flagstick and into the back bunker much to the disbelief of Finau.

The projected cut is two-over-par, Finau needed to get up and down from the back bunker to be within one shot of the projected cut line.

Out of the sand, he left himself 8 feet to save par. He dribbled the putt past the right lip and concludes the second round on the projected cut line.

It is likely, however, that as the wind picks up the scoring average worsens and Finau will likely make the cut by a comfortable few shots to spare.

Joe Summerhays Departs

Summerhays failed to capitalize on the lack of morning wind at Kiawah Island as he began the second round at eight-over-par and in need of a low score.

Bogeys on 2, 5, and 7 did not help. A double-bogey fell on 6 and his only birdie on the front came on the final front nine-hole, 9. He made the turn at four-over-par.

His back-nine began with a bogey on 10 before a birdie dropped on 13. Then, a string of bogeys on 14, 15 put him to six-over-par. Chaos ensued on the par 5 7th when Summerhays made a triple, another bogey dropped on 17 before concluding his 2021 PGA Championship with a double bogey to conclude at 12-over-par and 20-over-par through two rounds.
