SALT LAKE CITY – It was another good, not great, but not bad round for Utah’s Tony Finau at The Players Championship.

Finau began the second day at two-under-par and well behind the overnight leader Rory Mcllroy. He will enter the weekend 10 shots behind Xander Schauffele who entered the clubhouse with a five-shot lead on Friday afternoon.

Three birdies throughout the opening nine holes had Finau trending in the right direction, but a double bogey on the par 4 12th halted his round. A closing birdie on the par 4 15th had Finau finishing with another 68.

The shot of the day for Finau occurred on the par 4 7th hole when he holed out from 75 yards after spinning the golf ball back into the cup sending the gallery into a frenzy.

The par 4 12th, which is a reasonably simple par 4 that runs only 390 yards from tee box to pin caused havoc on Friday. Finau’s double was nothing like Rory Mcllroy’s quadruple-bogey.

Mcllroy’s first tee shot was sprayed out of bounds left with his fairway wood. His second tee shot was sprayed well right. One hand fell off the club shortly after impact on his fourth shot and his ball carried past the hole into a greenside bunker. On his fifth shot, one foot was in the bunker and the other was out as he flew the ball out of the bunker, past the hole, and into the rough.

His sixth shot failed to make the green after chunking an attempted chip. His seventh ran three feet by the hole and finally, his eighth shot found the bottom of the cup.

It was just his sixth quadruple bogey of his career and Mcllroy’s one-shot lead entering the hole quickly evaporated into three shots back.

Finau is currently in a share of 33rd and will likely tee off in the morning on Saturday given his positioning. Tee times and pairings are yet to be announced. The made cut by Finau puts last week’s missed cut at the U.S. Open behind him.
