Tony Finau Wilts Under Pennsylvania Sun In U.S. Open First Round

OAKMONT, Pennsylvania – Tony Finau’s approach shot on the final hole of round one in the 2025 U.S. Open was indicative of the rough day he had, shooting +6 on Thursday.
Finau’s second shot skipped off a sprinkler head near the green before super-balling into the adjacent grandstands. After startling a nearby fan into a state of excitement, Finau tossed the errant ball to a young golf enthusiast.
Finau is tied for 99th after a difficult first round.

The 2025 U.S. Open Golf Championship is being played at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.
J.J. Spaun leads the field with a -4. Triston Lawrence is second at -3, followed by three golfers at three under through 18 holes.
Front Nine
The Utah native opened round one with a par. Finau then immediately put himself behind the pack on hole two with a double-bogey on the par-four.
He rebounded to par four of the next five holes. On the fifth, Finau logged his first birdie.
He struggled to close the front nine, bogeying the final two holes to finish +3.

Finau tied for 64th after nine holes.
Back Nine
After putting his third shot of the back nine in a bunker, Finau was forced to three-putt for a triple-bogey.
The disastrous tenth hole dropped him to +6, eight holes behind the clubhouse leader, J.J. Spaun.
Finau birdied 12 to gather slight momentum, but couldn’t maintain. He went on to alternate pars and bogeys for the next four holes.

He birdied the 17th hole, followed by a par on 18 to finish round one with a +6 (76).
About Tony Finau
The Salt Lake City native has played professionally since 2007.
The PGA Championship was Finau’s 12th competition of 2025.
He started the 2025 PGA Tour season by tying for 15th at The Sentry on January 5. Following The Sentry, he missed the cut at The American Express and the Farmers Insurance Open later in the month.

Finau bounced back with a 13th and 5th place finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational, respectively. In March, he tied for 36th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, got cut at THE PLAYERS Championship, and tied for 32nd at the Texas Children’s Houston Open.
He went through a bit of a slump in April, with two finishes outside of the top 30 and missing the cut at the Masters. He bounced back in May with a T15 finish at the Truist Championship.
Finau has nine professional victories, including six on the PGA Tour. Finau won four events from 2022-23.
