Minnesota Vikings Sign BYU DE Tyler Batty To Undrafted Free Agent Deal

GREEN BAY, Wisc. – The Minnesota Vikings signed BYU defensive end Tyler Batty as an undrafted free agent following the conclusion of the NFL Draft on Saturday.

The former Cougars star will join a Minnesota team that finished with a 14-3 record in 2024.

Batty not getting selected in the draft was a bit of a surprise, as many mocks had him as an early third-day guy. With that said, the 2025 draft was full of surprises, with countless names jumping and falling.

The Vikings had one of the best rush defenses in the NFL last season. Assuming he makes the final 53-man roster, Batty will aim to assist in that department.

Minnesota will likely work with Batty to improve his block-shedding and overall quickness. If he can improve in those areas, he has the potential to be a key player in the front seven.

John Randle, a seven-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman, didn’t hear his name called across the 12 rounds of the 1990 NFL Draft but still went on to have a Hall of Fame-level career. The sky is still the limit for Batty.

About Tyler Batty

Batty attended Payson High School in Payson, Utah, where he was a first-team all-region, first-team all-valley, and an all-state honorable mention. He joined the BYU football program in 2020 and began play in 2021.

In his freshman season, he led BYU in sacks with 3.5 and was fourth on the team with 43 tackles (23 solo). He was named to the Pro Football Network All-Independent Second Team.

In 2022, Batty was a co-captain and finished with 52 tackles (29 solo), seven tackles-for-loss, two sacks, four quarterback hurries, and a fumble recovery. He was a Wuerffel Trophy candidate and a Ted Hendricks Award candidate.

A year later, in BYU’s inaugural Big 12 season, Batty was named to the All-State AFCA Good Works Team, the All-Big 12 Second Team, the Phil Steele All-Big 12 Third Team, and led the Cougars in three stat categories (tackles-for-loss, sacks, and QB hurries).

In his senior campaign, his achievements continued to stack up. He was All-Big 12 First Team, a Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Honorable Mention, and put on five award watchlists in the preseason. Batty finished his BYU career with 224 total tackles (122 solo), 33.5 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and two interceptions.
