Jo Adell’s historic glove headed to Baseball Hall of Fame

SALT LAKE CITY – Former Salt Lake Bee Jo Adell will donate the glove he used in a record-setting defensive performance when he robbed three Seattle Mariners home runs in one game—an unprecedented feat in the Statcast era.
The leather will soon take its place at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.

According to the Angels’ PR staff, Adell is the first player to steal three home runs in a single game since tracking began in 2004. No team has robbed three homers in a game during that time.

The seven-year veteran’s defensive masterpiece preserved the victory while leaving teammates, opponents, and the crowd in stunned disbelief.

“It’s just one of those things where baseball can amaze you night in and night out,” Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh said postgame. “You can see something you’ve never seen before. The game, it’s amazing. I’ve never seen that.”
Mariners’ Josh Naylor becomes Adell’s second victim
Seven innings later, and with his team nursing a narrow 1-0 lead, Seattle went back to the Adell well, with nearly the same result.
Josh Naylor lifted a drive toward right field that tracked eerily similar to Raleigh’s earlier blast. Once again, Adell took a flawless route, gathered, and launched skyward at the wall.
The catch was clean. The reaction was immediate.

Angel Stadium erupted in realization that the 2024 Gold Glove finalist had done it again.
“After the first one, we were pretty fired up out there,” Adell commented afterward. “And then got the second one, which looked identical to the first one, and I was like, ‘Wow, my routes are on point tonight.'”

The ninth inning provided one final test —and the most dramatic moment of the night.
With nobody down and Seattle trailing by one in the ninth, J.P. Crawford sliced a ball near the right-field fair pole.
Adell raced over, tracking the spin as he approached the wall at full speed. He leaped just in time, his left hip colliding with the top of the padding as the ball settled into his glove.
Momentum carried him head over heels into the stands.

The ballpark held its breath momentarily before Adell popped up, raised his glove to the sky, and drew a thunderous roar from the crowd as the game—and a slice of history—was secured.
Three stolen homers on one night, and now a place in Cooperstown —proof that defense, at its very best, can be just as unforgettable as any swing of the bat.
