Luna returns with goal, Gozo adds goal and 2 assists as RSL rolls Sporting KC, 3-1

SANDY — Diego Luna’s addition was Zavier Gozo’s gain Saturday afternoon.

Real Salt Lake took advantage of both.

Gozo had a goal and two assists, and Luna scored in the fourth minute of his first start of the season as Real Salt Lake stretched its unbeaten run to five-straight matches with a 3-1 win over Sporting Kansas City at America First Field.

Sergi Solans also scored for Salt Lake (4-1-1, 13 points), which handed Kansas City a second consecutive loss and third in the last four matches.

Dejan Joveljić scored a goal for SKC (1-4-1, 4 points), and nearly had another but for a disallowed goal for offsides in the final minutes.

But Luna made his first start since recovering from a knee injury suffered a few days before the season opener count, tallying his second goal contribution of the year and first since assisting on Stijn Spierings’ game-winner against Austin FC.

Luna inside near the top of the penalty area in the fourth minute before he unleashed a rip that put Salt Lake up, 1-0 in his first start.

Gozo dropped a pass from the right wing to Noel Caliskan, who hit Luna with a well-timed through-ball to split the defense for an open look that the 23-year-old U.S. international buried inside the near post for the early advantage.

Salt Lake out-shot its rivals from the fountain city 12-2 in the first half, and nearly doubled the advantage when Solans’ one-touch attempt from Morgan Guilavogui caromed off the crossbar in the 22nd minute.

Solans also had a counter attack just before first-half stoppage time that was reviewed for denial of a goal-scoring opportunity. But video review upheld the lack of a foul call as RSL took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

But Solans doubled the advantage in the 55th minute, finishing a fast-break effort led by Morgan Guilavogui that put Salt Lake up, 2-0.

It’s the third goal in the last four matches for Solans, who finished at the near post after a last-second pass from Zavier Gozo.

Joveljić pulled one back less than four minutes later for Kansas City, finishing from his left foot to pull the visitors back within one in the 59th minute.

But Gozo put the win away in the 82nd minute, teeing up his own volley from Noel Caliskan inside the far post to secure all 3 points.
