SANDY — Utah soccer fans have been waiting for this moment.

Lionel Messi will finally step onto the field at America First Field on Wednesday, when reigning MLS Cup Champions Inter Miami visits Real Salt Lake in the biggest regular-season home match in club history.

But while the spotlight will naturally fall on Messi, RSL enters the match in perhaps its best form of the Pablo Mastroeni era.

Real Salt Lake is unbeaten in six matches, riding a two-match winning streak, and remains perfect at home in 2026 with five wins from five matches in Sandy. Saturday’s 4-2 victory over San Diego was not just another win, it was a statement.

RSL overwhelmed one of the league’s most dangerous attacking teams with relentless pressure, fluid attacking movement, and four first-half goals.

Diego Luna forced a fourth minute mistake and scored unassisted, rookie Sergi Solans added two more goals, and designated player Morgan Guilavogui scored his first MLS goal with his family watching from pitchside.

Saturday’s crowd of 20,852 was RSL’s highest home attendance of 2026 and marked the club’s 10th straight sellout dating back to 2025. Wednesday’s crowd should surpass even that.

RSL has now scored 14 goals in five home matches this season, sits tied for third place in the Western Conference after seven matches played, and has a respectable +6 goal differential.

This is no longer Messi arriving to face an RSL side searching for itself, this is Messi arriving to face a team playing with confidence, scoring goals, and believing it can beat anyone at home.

Miami arrives in transition

Inter Miami remains one of the most dangerous teams in MLS because Messi can decide a match in an instant.

Miami sits in second in the Eastern Conference with 15 points through eight matches, and Saturday’s 3-2 win in Colorado showed just how dangerous the team can still be this season.

But they also went to Nashville last month in the CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16 and were eliminated on away goals — a reminder this team can still be exposed.

This is not quite the same Miami side that first exploded onto the scene in 2023.

Gerardo “Tata” Martino, who coached the team to a 2023 Leagues Cup trophy and a 2024 Supporter’s Shield departed for “personal reasons” after the 2024 season. Replacement Javier Mascherano coached the team to the MLS Cup trophy in 2025 but abruptly resigned for “personal reasons”  last week.

RSL legend Javier Morales, who was an assistant coach in Miami and who would have provided perhaps the most emotional Utah-specific subplot, departed with Mascherano.

Miami arrives in Utah under interim manager Guillermo Hoyos, who outlasted the Rapids on Saturday afternoon behind a Messi brace. Miami is still dangerous, but perhaps more vulnerable than in previous seasons.

Like RSL, Miami will be playing the second match of three within an eight-day span, and their second at altitude. They will be without starting defensive midfielder Yannick Bright, who received a red card against Colorado for using “offensive, abusive, insulting language,” per the referee.

They may also be without the services of starting right-sided winger Mateo Silvetti, who limped off injured in the 70th minute against Colorado.

And, of course, there’s a possibility that Messi’s minutes may be limited after playing the full 90 minutes against Colorado.

RSL, meanwhile, is beginning to turn America First Field into one of the league’s more difficult places to visit. If there is ever going to be a moment for RSL to beat Messi’s Miami, this feels like one.

Sergi Solans and the front four are flying

The match against San Diego felt like the clearest picture yet of what RSL wants to become. Their front four of Luna, Guilavogui, Solans, and Zavier Gozo were electric.

They pressed relentlessly from the first whistle, they rotated from place to place, forcing defenders to run with them, and forced turnovers and attacked unbalanced defenders quickly.

Solans now has five goals in his first five MLS starts.

The rookie’s brace against San Diego could easily have been a hat trick. He had a breakaway chance denied and admitted afterward that while he was happy with the chance, he was “not satisfied at all.”

“I think I could score one more goal at least,” Solans said.

His hungry mentality is part of what impresses Mastroeni so much.

“He is reliable in all phases of the game,” Mastroeni said. “Defensively, he presses, takes away pivots, and works immensely hard for the group. Offensively, the nuance of his game stands out. He understands how to win position and hold the ball up so the rest of the team can come forward.

“In Sergi, we have an unbelievable teammate and a top-level player,” he added. “We are super blessed to have him with the group.”

As Mastroeni noted, Solans is not just a goal scorer, he presses relentlessly, runs behind defenses, creates space for teammates, and makes unselfish decisions.

His assist to Guilavogui for the fourth goal may have been the best example of his team-first approach.

Chasing a hat trick, Solans could have shot from the top of the 18 as a second defender converged on him. Instead, he slipped the ball to an unmarked Guilavogui for his first MLS goal.

“I truly think it was better to give him the assist so he could score his first goal,” Solans said. “He has been an amazing player for us even though he had not scored.”

An unusual approach for improving Solans’ breakaways

For as good as Solans has been in front of goal, and as relentless as he has been on the counter-press, there is still one area he wants to improve: one-on-one finishing.

He has now been denied multiple times in breakaway situations this season, including the 13th minute chance Saturday against San Diego.

RSL’s solution is an unusual one.

Rather than working only with attacking coaches, Solans and the other attackers are studying finishing situations with goalkeeper coach Mirza Harambasic.

Harambasic has prepared video sessions for them focused on distances, angles, and how goalkeepers are taught to defend one-on-one situations.

“We discussed distances and how goalkeeper coaches teach one-on-one situations, and what will make strikers more successful,” Harambasic said after training on Monday. “It is about making sure they do not get into the distances that make it more advantageous for goalkeepers.

“So I am coaching counter to what I teach the goalkeepers.”

Pablo wants more energy from the bench

Despite the scoreline, Mastroeni was not entirely satisfied with Saturday’s performance.

He called the first half perhaps the best football he has seen since arriving in Utah.

The second half was another story.

San Diego clawed back into the match, pulled within two goals, and forced Rafa Cabral into several late saves.

For Mastroeni, the biggest issue was not tactics, it was energy. He felt some of the substitutes did not bring the level of intensity needed to close the match out.

“The disappointing part was the energy from some of the players who came into the game,” Mastroeni said postmatch. “The one thing that is super important when you come into a match is not quality or tactical understanding, it is energy. If we are in a defensive block, bring energy by stepping up, bumping players, infecting the guy next to you with that energy.

A lot of these guys were running on fumes. We had not had a game in a bit and the first half was a huge expenditure of energy. Some of the guys who came in did not provide what we needed.”

With Miami arriving during a congested stretch of matches, RSL will need contributions not only from its stars, but from the players coming off the bench.

Mastroeni wants substitutes who raise the level of the group rather than simply helping survive the final minutes.

Their energy levels will be something to watch for on Wednesday night.

Philip Quinton’s injury opens the door for Yedlin

One of the more surprising developments before the San Diego match came during warmups, when right-sided center back Philip Quinton suffered what was later described as tennis leg, a calf injury often involving the plantaris muscle.

The injury forced DeAndre Yedlin into the starting lineup.

Yedlin responded with one of his strongest performances of the season.

“He had a fantastic game,” Mastroeni said, “especially for someone who had not played since the first game of the season. Credit to Dre for being ready. It speaks volumes about the mentality of enduring a tough injury, waiting for his moment, and then stepping in and doing a masterful job.”

Against a San Diego side that thrives on running in behind, Yedlin’s pace and recovery ability were vital.

Now, with Miami coming to town, Yedlin could once again be asked to start against his former club.

That storyline goes deeper than simply facing old teammates.

When Miami won the 2023 Leagues Cup, Messi handed Yedlin the captain’s armband before the trophy presentation so the two of them could lift the first trophy in club history together.

Yedlin was Miami’s captain before Messi arrived, and the moment showed the level of respect Messi had for him.

Now Yedlin may be one of the players tasked with trying to stop him.

RSL Players to Watch

Sergi Solans
5 goals, 1 assist. The rookie has scored in five straight starts and looks more dangerous every week.

Zavier Gozo
2 goals, 4 assists. His pace, pressing, and crossing have made him one of RSL’s most dangerous players, even as he continues to improve defensively at his new wingback spot.

Diego Luna
2 goals, 3 assists in just 218 minutes. He is the emotional engine of the team and can completely change a game with his pressing and creativity. Every time he steps onto the field, he makes something happen.

Morgan Guilavogui
1 goal, 4 assists. Even before scoring against San Diego, he had already transformed RSL’s attack with his movement and passing.

Miami Players to Watch

Lionel Messi
7 goals, 0 assists. He remains the biggest threat on the field and showed it again with two goals against Colorado.

Germán Berterame
2 goals, 2 assists. He gives Miami another dangerous option beyond Messi.

Mateo Silvetti
2 goals, 3 assists. If healthy, he is one of Miami’s most dangerous wide attackers.

Rodrigo De Paul
1 goal, 3 assists. His passing range and ability to connect midfield to attack are critical for Miami.

The Biggest Night Yet

RSL nearly hosted Messi in the 2023 U.S. Open Cup final. They faced him in Florida in 2024, but this is different. This is Messi in Utah.

America First Field will be packed, ticket prices have soared, and global attention will follow. For the first time ever, the most famous player in the world will step onto the field in Sandy. But he will not be facing an intimidated team, he will be facing an RSL side that believes.
