Real Salt Lake advances to the Leagues Cup quarterfinals. Here’s what (and where) you need to know

SANDY — Real Salt Lake has qualified for the Leagues Cup 2026 quarterfinals, but the fourth-seeded MLS side won’t be hosting a game through the knockout tournament.

Neither will its opponent, Liga MX top-seeded Club Léon.

The two teams will meet Tuesday, Aug. 25 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado, the second of four quarterfinal matches in the annual tournament between MLS and Liga MX.

Eight clubs remain in contention for the Leagues Cup title, with three berths being awarded to the CONCACAF Champions Cup tournament.

All four matches will be held in the United States, with Club América hosting the Columbus Crew at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California — where the LA Galaxy play — and Toluca hosting Austin FC at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey.

The Liga MX side from Guanajuato rolled through to a perfect run in phase one of the competition, while RSL rebounded from a draw to Tigers UANL to bounce back by an aggregate score of 7-0 over Atlante FC and FC Juarez.

Salt Lake advancing in the tournament comes as homegrown winger Zavier Gozo is preparing to sign a contract with Crystal Palace in the English Premier League for a reported $15 million transfer fee.

But the recent spurt by Diego Luna, Morgan Guilavogui, Zach Booth and the continued breakout season of rookie Sergi Solans — as well as a back line that has collected back-to-back shutouts in front of goalkeeper Rafael Cabral — has confidence back in Salt Lake ahead of the weekend’s return to MLS play.

Real Salt Lake returns to MLS play Saturday, hosting Minnesota United FC (7:30 p.m. MT, Apple TV).

“We weren’t in the best circumstances or situations, I would say,” RSL defender DeAndre Yedlin admitted after Friday’s training at America First Field. “But I think now, we’ve got our confidence back and I think it’s big that we got those three results heading back into MLS.”

Why top-seeded Club Léon won’t host Real Salt Lake

Leagues Cup 2026 regulations approved hosting privileges for the two highest-ranked eligible teams in Liga MX for the quarterfinals, but both matches were designated to be neutral-site venues within MLS.

CF Monterrey and Club León do not hold hosting privileges, according to the Leagues Cup competition committee, thus sending the quarterfinal matches to other MLS sites.

What’s at stake for Leagues Cup 2026?

The four quarterfinal winners will advances to the Leagues Cup semifinals on Sept. 1-2, with each winner progressing to the championship match and the losers playing in a third-place game scheduled for Sept. 6.

Each of the competition’s champion, runner-up and third-place winner will qualify for the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

All matches are streamed live on Apple TV. Real Salt Lake’s quarterfinal is scheduled to kick off at 8:30 p.m. MT.

The two quarterfinal matches Wednesday have also been picked up by FS1 in English and UniMas/TUDN in Spanish.
