Pablo Mastroeni Offers Injury Updates Ahead Of SKC Clash

SALT LAKE CITY – Real Salt Lake manager Pablo Mastroeni has addressed his depleted roster by sharing news on a number of key injured players at Tuesday’s media availability.

Setback For Herrera

Aaron Herrera, unfortunately, suffered a “minor setback” yesterday, the setback is not related to the quadriceps injury that has been causing him issues since preseason. Herrera saw his first minutes of 2022 when he came off the bench in the 63rd minute for an injured Justen Glad during last weekend’s 2-1 win over Nashville. The extent of the setback is not known as the club is awaiting the results of scans to return today, however, Mastroeni did mention that he is optimistic Herrera would be available for this weekend’s fixture against SKC.

J. Glad Update

Glad, as mentioned above, injured his hamstring in the 63rd minute and is undergoing scans and tests this afternoon to determine the extent of the damage.

“Obviously I think he [Glad] will be out for a little bit,” Mastroeni said when speaking on the injury to Glad.

Captain Kreilach Progresses

Captain Damir Kreilach is also making progress with an injured calf but is yet to train with the main group since going down three weeks ago with the injury. However, Mastroeni did mention that Kreilach could be available for minutes off the bench this week if all goes according to plan for the remainder of the week.

Silva & Ochoa Updates

Marcelo Silva is also dealing with a toe injury that kept him unavailable for last weekend’s fixture against Nashville. He is training with the main group but is still dealing with some nagging pain. His status ahead of this week’s game is not yet known and will be determined later in the week following further rehab.

David Ochoa has been dealing with a quadricep injury and is “making great strides.” He is working individually with the goalkeeper coach Igancio Hernandez and will likely return to the main training group within the next “week or two” but will not make the trip to Kansas City this weekend.

Rubin Returns

Fortunately, Rubio Rubin played 60 minutes with the Real Monarchs over the weekend where he played well, looked sharp, and came away feeling healthy so his availability ahead of this weekend’s SKC clash is looking promising.

“It has been the same story for us through the preseason and the first four games but one thing that I cannot be more proud of this group for is the ability for the next guy to step up and really contribute,” Mastroeni said.

Next Match

Real Salt Lake’s start to the season does not get any easier next week as they travel to Children’s Mercy Park for a date with Sporting Kansas City. The fixture is scheduled for Saturday, March 26, with kickoff at 5 p.m.
