SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Legendary Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando said that he’s giving away signed gear for COVID-19 relief.

Rimando posted about the giveaway via his Instagram on Thursday, April 16.

“Did some cleaning the other day and found some old Rimando shirts, thinking about signing and using the donations to help those in need during this pandemic,” wrote Rimando. “Don’t want to put a price or minimum since these are hard times for many so whatever you feel is fair is good for me. Remember your donation is going to those who lost their jobs or can’t work because of COVID-19. I’ll ship out when things start to mellow out. I will put a signed glove or boot with the 2 highest donations each day for a week. The highest donation after a week will get a signed jersey added to their shipment. Please DM me to confirm size and style. Remember we’re all in this together.”

Rimando played 20 seasons in Major League Soccer and the better portion of it with RSL.

The goalkeeper first played in the MLS from 2000-01 with the Miami Fusion. His next stop in MLS came with D.C. United from 2002-06. He was then traded to Real Salt Lake where he played until his retirement after the 2019 season.

Coronavirus Relief Efforts

Major League Soccer suspended its season, including Real Salt Lake matches, in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Since the shutdown of sports, teams including Rimando’s former squad have pushed forward relief efforts for COVID-19.

In early April, the RSL Foundation, Utah Royals FC, and Real Salt Lake joined forces to help support the nurses and doctors on the front lines during the fight against COVID-19 by creating the “Feeding Our Frontline” Initiative.

In late March, Major League Soccer alongside the Major League Soccer Players Association unveiled the “MLS Unites” platform to highlight “all of the efforts that MLS players, coaches, clubs and the league are doing to address the important messages and programs taking place during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

How Do I Prevent It?

The CDC has some simple recommendations, most of which are the same for preventing other respiratory illnesses or the flu:

  • Avoid close contact with people who may be sick
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. Always wash your hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
The CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

How To Get Help

Additional Resources

If you see evidence of PRICE GOUGING, the Utah Attorney General’s Office wants you to report it. Common items in question include toilet paper, water, hand sanitizer, certain household cleaners, and even cold medicine and baby formula. Authorities are asking anyone who sees price gouging to report it to the Utah Division of Consumer Protection at 801-530-6601 or 800-721-7233. The division can also be reached by email at consumerprotection@utah.gov.
