‘This is the essence of sport’: Mastroeni questions RSL’s fight after 3-0 loss to Vancouver

SANDY — Pablo Mastroeni wasn’t interested in talking about tactics.

Not after Brian White muscled his way to Vancouver’s opening goal. Not after Thomas Müller was left alone to score another. And not after the Western Conference-leading Whitecaps walked out of America First Field with a 3-0 win Saturday night.

Real Salt Lake’s MLS winless streak has reached 12 matches, and this time its head coach wasn’t pointing to expected goals or chances created as evidence that better results were coming.

There have been performances during the streak that Mastroeni believed deserved more. Saturday’s first half wasn’t one of them.

Afterward, a visibly angry Mastroeni questioned whether his team competed hard enough.

“When Brian White, in one moment, grabs Phil’s arm and Phil gets jerked around and the guy scores, we’re not talking tactics,” Mastroeni said. “It’s not even box defending. It’s a duel, me against you, and I’m gonna win the duel. This is the essence of sport.”

White gave Vancouver the lead in the ninth minute, redirecting Oliver Larraz’s ball into the bottom corner after getting the better of Philip Quinton in front of goal.

It was White’s 16th MLS goal of the season, matching the career high he set last year after scoring 15 in both 2023 and 2024. The 30-year-old forward is earning $1.06 million in guaranteed compensation this season.

Twenty minutes later, Vancouver doubled its advantage through a considerably more decorated member of its attack.

White allowed a pass to run through to Yadaly Diaby, who drew the RSL defense before finding an unmarked Müller near the top of the penalty area. Muller calmly placed his shot into the upper corner.

Müller, a designated player making $5.15 million in guaranteed compensation this season, scored 250 goals with Bayern Munich and another 45 for Germany, including 10 World Cup goals.

Tactics change, result stays the same

Mastroeni had changed RSL’s defensive shape during the week, moving from a back five to a back four in an effort to keep Saba Lobjanidze higher up the field.

It didn’t work.

RSL struggled with Vancouver’s movement and spent much of the opening half defending in its own end before eventually reverting to a five-man back line.

“In hindsight, we should have kept it in a five,” Mastroeni said.

But the coach was adamant that formation wasn’t his biggest concern.

Mastroeni said RSL needed to rediscover an identity built around aggression, duels and making opponents uncomfortable.

“We’ve gotta be dogs,” he said. “We’ve gotta be disciplined. We’ve gotta work so hard for the guy next to us.”

Salt Lake nearly found a lifeline early in the second half.

After DeAndre Yedlin’s shot was blocked following a corner, the ball fell to Sergi Solans in the penalty area. Solans curled a shot beyond goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka, only for it to strike the post and travel across the face of goal.

Vancouver effectively ended the contest in the 63rd minute through its newest attacking addition.

Sam Junqua’s attempted clearance was deflected into Diaby’s path outside the penalty area, and the winger drove forward before sending a left-footed shot into the upper corner.

The 26-year-old Guinea international joined Vancouver from French Ligue 2 side Grenoble on Sept. 1 for a reported $1.5 million transfer fee after scoring 30 goals across more than 150 professional appearances in France and Austria.

Eneli makes his return

RSL brought on Emeka Eneli and Taylor Booth two minutes later.

Eneli’s appearance marked his first competitive minutes since a knee injury led to two surgeries and a postoperative infection that extended his recovery by months.

“I felt great,” Eneli said. “My body didn’t have any pain. I was just trying to get the game sharpness back, game fitness back.”

His return came as Mastroeni searches for exactly the type of edge Eneli has made a defining part of his game.

“I think that’s one of my best aspects, is kind of winning duels, bringing intensity and inspiring others on the pitch,” Eneli said. “Whenever you’re going through a rough patch, you kind of need that sort of spark.”

Booth provided some of Salt Lake’s better attacking moments down the stretch and delivered a late cross to Jason Shokalook in front of goal, but the forward sent his header wide.

Those missed opportunities only added to Mastroeni’s frustration.

“The Sergi chance in front of goal and the Shokalook chance in front of goal, like, if you don’t bury those, we can’t get out of this,” he said.

Mastroeni singled out Morgan Guilavogui, Yedlin, Colin Guske and Noel Caliskan as the four players he felt competed the way he wanted.

Mastroeni also put part of the performance on himself, acknowledging his tactical change may have given his players too much to think about and detracted from the mentality he wanted.

“Not just upset with the players, but upset at myself,” he said. “This is all of us.”

There is evidence that the locker room remains together.

Lobjanidze, Guilavogui and Kobi Henry have elected to remain with RSL rather than join their national teams during the upcoming international window.

“It gives me hope,” Mastroeni said. “It gives me the belief that the culture is intact, where they would be willing to stay and play for a team that hasn’t had a win in I don’t know how long in this league.”

The announced crowd of 20,574 remained behind RSL through the closing minutes despite the three-goal deficit, with supporters still loudly backing the team before players returned the applause after the final whistle.

RSL travels to Seattle for a midweek matchup with the Sounders on Wednesday night.
