HERRIMAN — The move, first reported by KSL Sports last week as part of Real Salt Lake’s acquisition of Saba Lobjanidze from Atlanta United, became official Monday.

Real Salt Lake announced it has traded Colombian midfielder Nelson Palacio to Toronto FC in exchange for $1.1 million in cash, with the potential to receive another $550,000 in general allocation money tied to individual and team performance incentives over the next three seasons. RSL also retained a sell-on percentage should Toronto eventually trade or transfer the midfielder.

While Palacio spent the first half of 2026 on loan with FC Zurich and was not expected to return to Pablo Mastroeni’s midfield, Monday’s announcement represents something much larger than the departure of one player.

It is the first cash-for-player trade in club history.

More importantly, it offers a clear indication of how Real Salt Lake’s new ownership group will empower its front office to construct its roster.

More than just a transfer

MLS has reshaped its roster rules over the past two seasons, granting clubs more flexibility in how they build teams.

Instead of limiting trades primarily to general allocation money or player swaps, clubs can now exchange players for cash. That money can be reinvested into soccer operations, transfer fees, infrastructure or other club expenses rather than existing solely as salary-budget currency.

For an ownership group that has shown little hesitation in investing in the roster, converting a player who hadn’t appeared for the first team in 2026 into more than $1 million in immediate cash feels like found money.

Just days after acquiring Lobjanidze from Atlanta United, RSL has now created additional flexibility before the secondary transfer window even opens.

Palacio also occupied one of the club’s valuable Under-22 initiative roster slots.

Under MLS’s current roster rules, clubs choose between two primary roster-building models. One allows three designated players and three U22 initiative players. The other sacrifices the third designated player in favor of two designated players, four U22 initiative players and additional general allocation money to strengthen the rest of the roster.

Those U22 initiative slots are among the most valuable assets in MLS, allowing clubs to pay significant transfer fees for young players while carrying only a modest salary-budget charge.

Whether Real Salt Lake intends to fill that newly opened U22 slot immediately is an open question at present.

But between the Saba acquisition, Palacio’s sale, and the financial flexibility created by both moves, RSL now seems to be entering the summer transfer window with a deliberate plan rather than reacting to opportunities as they arise.

A career remembered by moments

Palacio’s three seasons in Utah were never defined by statistics.

Instead, they were defined by moments.

His most famous came during the 2024 Leagues Cup.

After receiving a short layoff from Justen Glad more than 30 yards from goal, Palacio unleashed a right-footed rocket that exploded into the upper-left corner, defeating Atlas goalkeeper Camilo Vargas and sending America First Field into bedlam.

But the goal many Real Salt Lake supporters may remember most came months earlier.

During RSL’s remarkable 15-match unbeaten run early in the 2024 season, they found themselves on the wrong side of 3-0 on the road in Dallas. Just two minutes after Dallas tallied their third, Diego Luna got one back for the Claret and Cobalt to stop the bleeding.

Anderson Julio tacked on another a dozen minutes later, but with the final grains of sand slipping through the hourglass, Palacio was the hero who stepped up in the 8th minute of stoppage time.

Receiving the ball just outside the box, he hit a worm-burning, seeing-eye shot that somehow found its way through a forest of defenders before nestling inside the left post. The dramatic equalizer completed an improbable comeback from three goals down, rescuing a 3-3 draw.

Those flashes only hinted at what made Palacio intriguing.

When he broke into the lineup, the Colombian international often stood out less for crunching tackles than for his passing range. Comfortable switching the point of attack or threading driven balls between the lines, he brought a calmness in possession and a willingness to play progressive passes that complemented midfield partners Emeka Eneli and Braian Ojeda.

Always boasting a 1,000-watt smile, Palacio brought a different rhythm to the RSL midfield.

Ultimately, however, consistent opportunities proved difficult to find.

After making 48 MLS regular-season and playoff appearances for Real Salt Lake, Palacio spent the past year on loan with FC Zurich before Monday’s permanent move.

A familiar destination

Palacio now joins a Toronto FC side coached by former Real Salt Lake assistant Robin Fraser.

The Reds enter the second half of the season tied for 11th in the Eastern Conference, but just four points outside the playoff positions.

That standing reflects both the progress and the challenge of Toronto’s rebuild.

After years of expensive Designated Player signings that failed to produce the impact the club envisioned, Toronto has spent the past two seasons reshaping both its roster and salary structure, placing greater emphasis on younger, more flexible players capable of contributing over the long term.

Palacio fits that profile.

For Toronto, he represents another piece in an ongoing rebuild.

For Real Salt Lake, he became something just as valuable: an asset developed, loaned, and ultimately converted into financial flexibility.

In the span of a week, Real Salt Lake has added an experienced MLS winger, converted an inactive asset into $1.1 million in cash, preserved future upside through performance incentives and a sell-on clause, and opened another coveted U22 Initiative roster slot.

In modern MLS, clubs aren’t judged only by the players they sign. They’re increasingly judged by the value they can create from every roster spot they control.

For Real Salt Lake, Nelson Palacio’s departure may ultimately say as much about the club’s future as his memorable moments said about its past.
