SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell received a vote for the 2021-22 NBA MVP in ESPN’s Straw Poll.

The vote took place from December 3-6, according to Tim Bontemps.

Mitchell tied with Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine for 12th place in the MVP Straw Poll. Mitchell and LaVine each received one vote for their play during the first two months of the season.

ESPN’s NBA MVP Straw Poll

  1. Steph Curry (Golden State Warriors)
  2. Kevin Durant (Brooklyn Nets)
  3. Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks
  4. Nikola Jokic (Denver Nuggets)
  5. Chris Paul (Phoenix Suns)
  6. DeMar DeRozan (Chicago Bulls)
  7. Jimmy Butler (Miami Heat) & Devin Booker (Phoenix Suns)
  8. Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks)
  9. Trae Young (Atlanta Hawks)
  10. Paul George (Los Angeles Clippers)
  11. Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers)
  12. Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz) & Zach LaVine (Chicago Bulls)

Voting Process

According to ESPN:

“To gauge where the race stands roughly 30% into the season, ESPN asked 100 media members to participate in an informal poll that mimics the postseason award voting. To make the balloting as realistic as possible, there were at least two voters from each of the league’s 28 markets, along with a cross-section of national and international reporters. As with the NBA’s official vote at the end of season, voters were asked to submit a five-player ballot, and results were tabulated using the league’s scoring system: 10 points for each first-place vote, seven points for second, five points for third, three points for fourth and one point for fifth.”

This season, Mitchell has led the Jazz to an 18-7 start. Utah currently sits in first place in the Northwest Division and has the third-best record in the NBA. Only the Warriors and Suns currently own a better record than the Jazz.

The fifth-year guard is averaging 24.6 points per game and is shooting a career-high 45.3 percent from the field, including 34.8 percent on three-pointers.

Mitchell is recording 4.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 0.2 blocks, and 1.7 steals per contest.

Utah’s next game is on the road against the Washington Wizards on Saturday, December 11 at 5 p.m. (MDT). The game will be broadcast on AT&T SportsNet, NBA League Pass, and The Zone Sports Network.
