Jazz Mailbag: Is Ace Bailey the Jazz’s x-factor?

Sep 23, 2026, 11:51 AM

SALT LAKE CITY – Welcome to the Utah Jazz Mailbag! This week, we look at the importance of Ace Bailey this season.

Each week, we will send out a prompt on X and BlueSky asking for the questions you have about the Jazz.

Then, we’ll respond to as many as we can in that week’s Jazz mailbag in the Jazz Notes podcast.

Jazz Mailbag: How critical is Ace Bailey this season?

Question: The real x-factor for this team’s playoff hopes this season is Ace Bailey’s development.

I don’t think we’re talking enough about how much of a difference-maker he could be on both ends if his baseline play this year is consistently at/exceeds his best play from last year.

Answer: Bailey is inarguably a critical piece of the Jazz’s future.

At 6-foot-8, with positional versatility, a scorer’s mentality, and the potential to develop into a high-impact defender, the 20-year-old has a real chance to become the best player on the roster, in time.

As a rookie, the wing displayed all the traits that convinced the Jazz to select him with the No. 5 overall pick in 2025. He recorded three 30-point games, 11 multi-block games, including five with at least three blocks, and showcased an offensive repertoire matched by few players in the NBA.

His upside is truly tantalizing.

That said, it may not be realistic to expect him to be a key factor in the Jazz’s playoff hopes this season.

Bailey should be a regular member of the rotation as a sophomore and could compete for the starting shooting guard job on opening night. As a result, his success or failure should influence the team’s pursuit of the postseason.

However, if he fails to improve on last season’s production, the Jazz have other options to lean on in a playoff chase.

Scoring is Bailey’s greatest strength right now, but even beyond Lauri Markkanen, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Keyonte George, the Jazz likely have a more reliable bucket-getter in Brice Sensabaugh and better shooters in Svi Mykhailiuk and Josh Green.

The Rutgers product’s size creates defensive versatility, but he remains far less proven on that end than Green and Josh Okogie.

Jazz Mailbag: Ideally, who is the team’s best player in three years?

That’s without mentioning No. 2 overall pick Darryn Peterson, who may already be more polished than Bailey on both ends of the floor, even as a rookie.

Again, this is not a knock on Bailey’s future, which may be as bright as, or brighter than any other player on the roster. Instead, it’s a recognition of where his game stands today and what it takes to impact winning at a high level in the NBA.

A major leap can’t be ruled out, and if Bailey improves his scoring efficiency, becomes more consistent defensively, and sharpens his ball-handling and playmaking, he could emerge as one of the five best players on the Jazz this season.

But that’s a lot to ask of a player who is a little more than two years removed from high school basketball, and it may not be ideal for his development.

With minutes at a premium and winning now a top priority, the Jazz may choose to bring both Bailey and Peterson along more deliberately as they develop the team’s young core.

Even though Bailey was thrown into the fire as a rookie, averaging nearly 28 minutes per game, he could see his playing time dip slightly as the Jazz take a more measured approach to his growth.

Truthfully, that’s fine.

Bailey’s long-term development remains a major variable in the organization’s championship aspirations, but he doesn’t need to be fully ready to help the Jazz win just yet.
