LAS VEGAS – The Utah Jazz made a late push but ultimately came up short as a 103-93 loss to the Golden State Warriors kept them winless at the Vegas Summer League.

With Ace Bailey and Walt Clayton Jr. out with injuries, sophomores Cody Williams and Kyle Filipowski led the Jazz with 22 and 21 points, respectively.

Utah is back in action tomorrow as they face the No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper and the San Antonio Spurs.

Tale Of Two Games For Kyle Filipowski

Kyle Filipowski played his best game of the summer on Friday with 32 points, six rebounds, and five assists on over 70 percent shooting.

Against Golden State, he had a fine stat line of 21 points and six rebounds. However, he shot 9/21 from the floor and ended with three turnovers and eight fouls.

There were multiple times where Filipowski had a mismatch on the block but ended up settling for a turnaround jumper or a different tough shot after failing to create space.

To be fair, summer league is the time to work out kinks. But it’s also the time to push yourself and be uncomfortable. The next step for Flip can be made with consistency, and he was unable to show that in game two.

Isaiah Collier Remains Aggressive Offensively

Speaking of making yourself uncomfortable, Collier’s rookie season was a tale of getting downhill and running the offense. So far this summer, he has taken his foot off the passing pedal and looked to find his shot a lot more.

He did struggle a bit, finishing with nine points on 3/7 shooting. But it’s clear he’s attempting to make strides in that area.

When the regular season rolls around, Collier will likely lean back into his strengths, but the fact that he is showing a willingness to push his own boundaries is a positive sign.

In just 20 minutes, the box score didn’t quite reflect his full impact. With most of his work done in the first half, he added five rebounds and four assists to his point total.

Cody Williams Excels Everywhere But From Three

Easily the most impressive performance from a Jazzman was Cody Williams.

The sophomore forward played a team-high 36 minutes and finished with 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals while shooting 47 percent. Really, the only blemishes on his performance were the 1/6 mark from downtown and three turnovers.

Williams was all over the court defensively all game, but maybe the most impressive part of his game was the bounce-back after the first half.

Williams had three points at the break and shot just one of six. In the second half, he scored 19 points on nearly 64 percent. Although he still gets outmuscled at times and has the occasional bad miss, the former No. 10 overall pick has been one of the brightest spots for the Jazz this summer.

Other Notable Points

  • G League standout Cam McGriff got his first Summer League start with the Jazz against the Warriors and shined with 19 points and five rebounds with five made threes.
  • Former Utah Utes guard Gabe Madsen lit Utah up from downtown as he poured in 22 points with six made threes.
  • The Jazz looked poised late in the game and made a push. Trailing by 14 with 2:42 left, Utah went on an 8-0 run to close the gap to six with 45 seconds on the clock. Golden State ultimately sealed the deal with a few late trips to the free throw line.
  • Utah shot 8 percent better from the floor and 11.5 percent better from three in the second half compared to the first. Similar to last season, a slow start and turnover problems were the biggest contributors to the loss.
