Utah Jazz Launch 40 Three-Point Attempts, Rudy Gobert Feasts In Win Over Miami Heat

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Jazz responded to head coach Quin Snyder’s plea to shoot more threes and it opened things up for Rudy Gobert in Utah’s win over the Miami Heat.

Gobert and the Jazz faced the Heat in the second of Utah’s three scrimmages prior to the restart of the 2019-20 season at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

The Jazz played much better than the first scrimmage and held on in the fourth quarter for a 101-99 win.

Three-Point Shooting

After only shooting 24 triples in the team’s first scrimmage against the Phoenix Suns, Snyder said that he wanted to see the Jazz attempt more shots from downtown.

“We’ve been mainly a catch and shoot three-point team,” Snyder said prior to Utah’s game against the Heat. “In order for us to absorb those eight threes and hopefully have more, I think we have to shoot off the dribble more. We have some guys that can do that. Donovan [Mitchell], Mike Conley, Jordan Clarkson, Joe Ingles. So we’ve got some guys that can shoot it.”

His players listened and launched 40 shots from three-point range against Miami. Unfortunately for Snyder and the Jazz, Utah only made 14 of those attempts.

“They all want each other to attack and to shoot, so it’s good when, you know, they’re getting encouragement from us and then getting encouragement for each other taking those shots and we said it’s more about taking them,” Snyder said after the game. “I think we’ve got good shooters and we didn’t shoot well early in the game, and then I think as the game progressed, we started making more of them.”

Despite only connected on 35 percent of those attempts, the difference in shot selection from Utah’s first scrimmage was what Snyder wanted and it helped open the offense up for Jazz center Rudy Gobert.

Rudy Gobert

The Heat didn’t play two of their best players in Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, and Gobert took advantage.

From the jump, Utah’s roster sought out Gobert and the NBA All-Star center made himself available.

“Rudy was very good,” Snyder said of Gobert after the win. “I thought he made himself available, and really Mike (Conley) and Donovan (Mitchell) just did a terrific job of finding him.”

After the first quarter, he had a game-high 11 points. By comparison, Gobert only scored 5 points in Utah’s first scrimmage.

The two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year ended the game with 21 points on 8-9 shooting, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

Other Jazzmen

Fellow Jazz All-Star Donovan Mitchell struggled to find the bottom of the basket in Utah’s win. He finished with 8 points on 3-11 field goals.

Utah guards Mike Conley and Jordan Clarkson helped pick up the offensive load and combined for 34 points on 11-24 shooting.

Conley scored 17 points on 7-15 field goals. He added 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and a steal in 24 minutes.

Clarkson added 17 points. He also recorded 4 boards, 2 assists, and 2 steals in 25 minutes off the bench.

Kelly Olynyk led Miami with 27 points.
