Utah Jazz Summer Calendar Dates

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah Jazz season ended prematurely, but with a short offseason ahead, there are a few key dates fans need to keep an eye on in what should be a busy summer.

Between the NBA Draft, the Olympics, Summer League, and free agency, there will be plenty of basketball action to keep Jazz fans entertained over the summer.

Here’s a look at the Jazz summer calendar:

June 21-27: NBA Draft Combine

The NBA Draft combine is already underway and was the first stop for Jazz front office members Dennis Lindsey and Justin Zanik after the season concluded.

June 29 – July 4: FIBA Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament

While Rudy Gobert and Joe Ingles have already punched their ticket to the Tokyo Olympics, Bojan Bogdanovic will try to guarantee Croatia a spot during the FIBA Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament beginning in late June, while free agent Ersan Ilyasova will try to lead Turkey to a spot at the Olympic games.

Donovan Mitchell declined an invite to compete for Team USA after suffering an ankle injury late in the Jazz season.

July 24 – August 8: Tokyo Olympics

The Tokyo Olympics basketball tournament begins on July 24 and will feature at least two Jazz players in Ingles and Gobert. The games could features as many as four Jazz players this summer depending on whether Bogdanovic and Ilyasova can get their teams to qualify in the FIBA tournament.

While Team USA is the favorite to win gold, both France and Australia are expected to be in medal contention.

France hasn’t won a medal since 2000, while Australia has never medaled.

July 29: NBA Draft

The NBA Draft will be held on July 29. The Jazz own the 30th pick in the draft after owning the best record in the NBA during the 2020-21 regular season.

The Jazz are scheduled to have only one pick in the draft after they traded their 2021 second-round draft pick to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Jarrell Brantley in 2019.

It’s unlikely the Jazz will have a first-round draft pick in 2022 as part of the Mike Conley trade, adding extra importance to this year’s selection.

August 2: NBA Free Agency Begins

NBA Free Agency will open on August 2 in what should be a tense stretch for the Jazz. Mike Conley will be one of the most desirable free agents on the market and would push deep into the luxury tax should they choose to sign him.

Georges Niang, Juwan Morgan, Ersan Ilyasova, Jarrell Brantley, and Trent Forrest will also be free agents this summer.

Teams can officially begin signing free agents on August 6.

August 3-6:  Salt Lake City Summer League

The Salt Lake City Summer League will return to Utah after last year’s COVID-19 hiatus.

The Jazz, Memphis Grizzlies, and San Antonio Spurs will run over three days between August 3-6 in a round-robin format.

Three-day passes to the event cost $18.

August 8-17: Las Vegas Summer League

The Las Vegas Summer League will return this summer after also missing last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The nine-day event will feature all 30 NBA teams and has traditionally been played at the Cox Pavilion and Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus.

September 28: Training Camps Open

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the NBA will return to its traditional October – June schedule for the 2021-22 NBA season.

Training camps are scheduled to open for all 30 NBA teams on September 28.

October 19: 2021-22 NBA Season Begins

The 2021-22 NBA season will open officially on October 19.
